Department Overview

An exciting opportunity in the field of immunology and cancer immunotherapy has been created in the laboratory of Dr. Amy Moran in the Cell, Developmental and Cancer Biology Department at Oregon Health and Science University. Dr. Moran’s research program is currently focused on understanding how sex hormones shape immune responses in healthy and diseased settings. The lab’s goals are to determine the microenvironmental impacts of hormones on shaping immune responses in health and disease. We peform translational research bridging clinical care with bench discovery to improve health.

 

We are looking for a Research Assistant 2 to provide support with ongoing lab research projects in the Moran Lab. The candidate will assist with some or all of the following: preparation of research tools and reagents, organizing and maintaining lab equiptment and supplies, processing cell and tissue samples from mice and humans, animal husbandry and mouse colony management, clinical trial biorepository organization, purchasing and expense reconciliation, EPIC chart reviews, consenting patients to studies, maintaining documentation of patient data, verifying patient eligibility criteria, ensuring adherence to regulatory standards and Good Clinical Practices, perform scheduling and group organization tasks, and other general laboratory duties. In this role you might also be responsible for fostering communication between healthcare providers and patients, and reporting on any changes that occur within abstracted patient data. Flexibility, acute attention to detail, ability to multitask, and dedication to providing high-quality patient care are essential for success in this role.

 

The candidate should have a scientific background with experience and general knowledge in cell biology, tissue culture, and ideally flow cytometry. Coursework in immunology and exposure to immunological research techniques is preferred. Must be able to prioritize a variety of tasks, and be able to thrive in a team-oriented environment. The successful candidate should have strong organizational and problem-solving skills and attention to detail, be flexible with work schedule, and be able to follow direction yet work independently when necessary.

Function/Duties of Position

  • Animal care and procedures:  health checks, tumor measurements, injections, necropsy, genotyping
  • Maintenance of mouse colonies
  • Assist investigators with scheduling, organization, chart reviews, consenting patients, obtaining tissue and blood and processing, cell culture, flow cytometry.
  • Collecting data and simple data analysis and quantification.
  • Routine laboratory housekeeping tasks, ordering of supplies, and expenditures reconciliations, support adherence to regulatory protocols.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree (4 yr) in biological sciences with coursework mammalian cell biology and/or molecular biology.
  • Formal experience in a wet bench cell/molecular biology research laboratory.
  • Independent problem-solving skills; reliability; motivation; high organizational skills (including data management); excellent interpersonal communication skills, team player.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Coursework in immunology, familiarity with tumor biology, epigenetics.
  • Prior laboratory experience.
  • Experience with animal handling and flow cytometry.
