The individual employed in this position provides support to the necessary laboratory analyses to transfuse patients safely, maintain and monitor the blood product inventory, document all transactions relating to blood product movement and use, monitor and maintain testing and blood product storage equipment, prepare blood components, choose appropriate blood products for patient hemotherapy and ensure that hospital and clinic are aware that products are available when the necessary lab work/processing are completed. The person in this position is authorized to perform some testing in Transfusion services. Specimen processing and test performance is done independently and after appropriate training. Review of results is required in the case of unusual/complex results, procedural problems, or when dictated by policy or procedure. This position fulfills responsibility to the organization by adhering to all OHSU policies, and by performance that promotes teamwork, excellent communication and the service excellence philosophy.

Function/Duties of Position

Laboratory Technical Assistant Bench Duties

  • Assist with routine lab testing by accessioning specimens, reviewing patient’s previous record, and setting up and initiating runs on the instrument, under direction of the medical technologist.
  • Enter blood products into the OHSU LIS Transfusion Service inventory system upon arrival. Recognize appropriate and inappropriate shipping conditions and take prescribed action. Remove and label segments from red cell products accurately for confirmation testing. Store products in correct temperature environment once entered into the computer. Reconcile product inventory daily if assigned.
  • Assist with maintaining and managing an adequate inventory of perishable blood products and ensure that excessive wastage does not occur. Moniotr products stored in surgical refrigerators.
  • Receive phone calls and product orders. Document verbal orders. Assist with triage of requests, and alert technologist of any unusual orders or situations.
  • Assist with product preparation by thawing plasma and cryoprecipitate, dividing units, and preparing aliquots. Label products correctly
  • Choose appropriate blood products for patients based on urgency of need, available inventory, lab results, and therapeutic requirements. Consult with Medical Technologist as necessary
  • Issue and return blood products according to SOP and documenting in computer system. Respond appropriately to alerts.
  • Order products from Red Cross, with guidance from medical technologist.
  • Document transactions involving blood products correctly and legibly.
  • Follow established policy and procedur

Quality Control/Assessment Activities

  • Document proper temperature and appearance of blood products during storage and while in transit.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance activities and Proficiency Testing as assigned.
  • Calibrate equipment as assigned.
  • Organize, check for accuracy, and report blood product usage statistics as assigned.
  • Participate in departmental Quality Monitoring/Improvement processes. Recognize and document variations.

Other

  • Promote excellent teamwork and customer service. Answer telephone queries correctly, courteously, and promptly; refer questions when appropriate.
  • Adhere to attendance policy: report to department on time at scheduled beginning of shift, do not leave before scheduled end of shift without first checking with Coordinator or Manager; remain in area; clock in and out on Transfusion Service phone.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and training.
  • Complete other duties and projects assigned by the Manager, Coordinator, or Medical Director.
  • Performs inventory and orders and stores supplies, according to established procedures.
  • Answers the telephone and triages calls in a timely, courteous and appropriate manner.
  • Performs requirements for Staff Members as outlined in Compliance Roles and Responsibilities in OHSU Hospitals and Clinics and understands and complies with the Code of Conduct, OHSU and departmental policies and procedures, and other applicable procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Communicates and works effectively as part of a team, and interacts with a variety of clients, including, doctors, nurses, laboratory staff and patients, maintaining a customer service focus at all times.
  • Carries out job responsibilities ethically, professionally, and with personal integrity, and functions as part of the team exhibiting excellent communication, teamwork and customer service skills.
  • Takes call, and works weekends and holidays and variable shifts commensurate with the needs of the lab.
  • Does not use Internet on OHSU workstations for other than work-related business during work hours

Required Qualifications

  • A certificate or Associate Degree from an accredited Laboratory Technician training program;

  • OR Completion of a certified Laboratory Assistant training program which includes 45 credit hours in chemistry or biological science, plus one year experience in a clinical laboratory: medical Lab Assistant certification preferred (CLMA(AMT) or equivalent;

  • OR Forty five credit hours of college level chemical or biologic courses and two years of experience as a Laboratory Assistant in a clinical laboratory; Medical Lab Assistant certification preferred (CLMA(AMT) or equivalent.

  • General knowledge of laboratory terminology, equipment, material, techniques, regulations, and safety.

  • Skills in handling laboratory specimens, record keeping, and laboratory equipment

  • Skill in using several different computer systems, including work processing, dedicated LIS/HIS etc.

  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions accurately, and operate and maintain standard laboratory equipment.

  • Ability to work independently, within established guidelines to adjust to rapidly changing priorities and apply problem solving skills.

  • Ability to work in a multitasking environment and display technical skills a various stations throughout transfusion services

  • Compliance with Code of Conduct, Respect in the workplace and Applicable policies, procedures and agreements related to position, department or OHSU as a whole

  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Recent experience in a clinical laboratory.

Pay Range: $23.88 - $32.30 per hour

  • Positions in the laboratory and environs may require working flexible schedules including nights, weekends and holidays; working at multiple laboratory or hospital sites; traveling between laboratories and sites by stairs, elevator, tram, shuttle or other means; exposure to blood and body fluids, chemical hazards, radiation; working in a somewhat noisy and crowded environment; wearing gloves and other Personal Protective Equipment for long periods of time; experiencing occasional temperature control fluctuations in building.
  • Positions in laboratory departments require the ability to carry and lift up to 30 lbs.; ability to stand or sit for 4-8 hours depending on the tasks assigned; ability to bend, reach, and carry as required for assigned tasks; ability to utilize simple and complicated laboratory equipment and computers; ability to utilize multi-line phones, pagers, dictation equipment, and office equipment.
