Cascade Life Alliance (CLA) serves to save, enhance, and heal lives through organ donation and transplantation. CLA is the federally designed organ procurement organization (OPO) serving potential organ donors in Oregon, southern Washington, and western Idaho.

 

The responsibilities of the Forensic Integration Specialist include initiating and maintaining relationships with external stakeholders critical to furthering the mission of saving, enhancing, and healing lives through organ donation and transplantation. These stakeholders encompass medical examiner/coroner teams, forensic pathologists, district/prosecuting attorneys, and funeral homes.

Function/Duties of Position

Relationship Management & Education

  • Establish and maintain ongoing communication, including organ donation education, case reporting and troubleshooting, regular data reporting, and relationship building with non-hospital external stakeholders vital to supporting the mission of CLA to include, but not limited to medical examiner/coroner teams, forensic pathologists, district/prosecuting attorneys, and funeral homes.
  • Establish and cultivate connections while sustaining relationships with partner organ procurement organizations to remain updated on best practices and national trends
  • Attend conferences, events, and meetings frequented by non-hospital external stakeholders on behalf of CLA. Provide insights into the donation process, CLA's mission, and advocate for support towards donation initiatives. This role may entail overnight stays and extensive travel.
  • Assist CLA Hospital Development in promoting tissue donation education within hospital partners that have limited or no organ donation potential

Regulatory

  • Interpret, troubleshoot, and execute CLA policies and procedures concerning medical examiner and jurisdictional case
  • Interpret, troubleshoot, and implement CLA policies and procedures regarding funeral home and/or decedent transportation needs.
  • Identify and refer potential deviations from normal workflow regarding interactions with non-hospital external stakeholders regarding potential investigations of concerns, complaints, errors, and omissions.

Process Management

  • Daily identification of CLA referrals and donor cases subject to medical examiner/coroner jurisdiction.
  • Participation in internal staff huddles during various stages of the donation process, as appropriate.
  • Provide real-time onsite and/or remote assistance to clinical staff during organ donation cases that require additional actions to support medical examiner/coroner office release for organ donation. This includes, but is not limited to obtaining photographs, preparing, and distributing case follow-up paperwork/documentation, and reviewing medical records to relay accurate information. This includes obtaining and maintaining staff access to each hospital system’s electronic medical records. This role may entail overnight or short notice travel to distant hospitals.
  • Assist in developing and disseminating communication tools like email blasts or newsletters to facilitate relationship-building and promote information exchange between CLA and non-hospital external stakeholders
  • Participate in post-case debrief and review process with internal and/or external partners to address issues and provide feedback for process improvement.
  • Participate in CLA new employee orientation program by training new staff on internal policies and procedures relevant to collaborating with non-hospital external stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.

  • Two years experience in marketing, education, healthcare, and/or another related field.

  • Critical thinker with determination and persistence.

  • Strong attention to detail, organization, multitasking & time management.

  • Strong conflict management skills as well as written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong public speaking skills.

  • Ability to create and present targeted education modules in a variety of settings (small or large group, virtual, etc.).

  • Ability to work productively – both independently and as a team member – with accountability to all other team members for meeting agreed upon objectives.

  • Possess strong strategic skills and fundamental knowledge of medical terminology.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation

Preferred Qualifications

  • One or more years of experience in one of the following fields: medicolegal death investigations, mortuary services, within an OPO, and/or other related experience.

Additional Details

  • This position requires extensive travel throughout and beyond CLA’s 111,000 square mile donation service area, and the ability to work long and varied hours as needed. Travel may be via automobile and/or light or commercial aircraft.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license. Must be able to lift up to 80 pounds.
