Department Overview

Under direct supervision, primarily performs basic research or lab activities similar to a Research Assistant 1 or Lab Aide*.

Function/Duties of Position

Research at the OHSU SOM will include not only basic bench work in the laboratory but also learning how to design experiments:

  • Independently using instrumentation and performing basic laboratory techniques such as pipetting and buffering solutions with a pH meter.
  • Generating and analyzing data from experiments.
  • The summer will include lab meetings and learning how to keep a lab

Required Qualifications

  • Enrolled in or on vacation from or is otherwise registered in High School, OR Undergraduate Program (minimum 6 credit hours)
  • Demonstrable record of reliable attendance, punctuality and proven successful performance
  • Demonstrated ability to read, write and understand written and oral instructions in English.
  • One year of high school-level sciences such as biology or chemistry
  • Know how to use basic instrumentation in a laboratory and calculate basic math equations used to make buffers

  • Basic knowledge of zebrafish husbandry

Additional Details

Typical wet bench laboratory conditions such as buffer solutions, standard chemicals, glassware, instruments, etc. Work location at OHSU campus Marquam Hill location. Student workers would not be exposed to human tissues/fluids without proper training. Work schedules will vary and will involve some weekend feeding of zebrafish, and washing and sterilization of laboratory glassware.
