OHSU Environmental Health and Safety Department (EHS) oversees/manages programs and policies aimed at minimizing safety, health, environmental, and regulatory risks to the OHSU community. This position will provide support for various EHS projects under the supervision, direction and support of EHS program managers and subject matter experts.

Function/Duties of Position

This non-OHSU student worker position will work in Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) with duties supporting all missions of OHSU. EHS oversees/manages programs and policies aimed at minimizing safety, health, environmental, and regulatory risks to the OHSU community. This position will provide support for various EHS projects under the supervision, direction and support of EHS program managers and subject matter experts. The mix of on-site and work-from-home responsibilities are dependent on the exact role and duties assigned but are approximately 70% on-site and 30% work-from-home.

 

Assigned tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • surveying equipment such as emergency eyewashes, chemical fume hoods, biological safety cabinets, deionized water systems,
  • inventorying chemicals and spaces,
  • updating information for the SciShield database,
  • performing or shadowing inspections using paper or electronic checklists (e.g., Sentact, SciShield),
  • certifying/testing equipment,
  • data/document management and recordkeeping
  • communicating with customers and other assigned tasks.

Tasks assigned to non-OHSU student workers provide an introduction to EHS as a profession and experience that can lead to careers in EHS in addition to highly transferable skills applicable to a variety of fields.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma; OR Equivalent
  • Enrolled in or on vacation from or is otherwise registered in
    • Undergraduate Program (minimum 6 credit hours),
    • OR Graduate Program (minimum 4.5 credit hours)
  • Time Management skills, include timeliness, dependability, and ability to consistently meet deadlines.
  • Comfort and familiarity with computers, Microsoft and iOS applications.
  • Willingness to learn new things.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to work well without direct supervision.
  • Compliance with Code of Conduct, Respect in the workplace and Applicable policies, procedures and agreements related to position, department or OHSU as a whole

  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of coursework in physical/life sciences, such as biology and chemistry, and associated lab courses.
  • Moderate experience using all Microsoft Office applications including Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Access, and Visio.
  • Proficiency in calendaring and email application such as Outlook.
  • Project Management skills

Additional Details

  • This position requires between 10 and 20 hours per week on average, with approximately 30% of work at a computer and 70% work in the field. On-site work can be at any of the OHSU campuses or off-campus locations. Chemical, physical and biological hazards may be encountered, and the employee must be able to evaluate the exposure potential to ensure health and safety.
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time and to travel to various buildings, offices, and laboratories on the OHSU campuses; use a computer for part or most of work shift. Able to lift and carry up to 30 lbs. Able to use a N95 respirator as necessary. Able to work in or near animal holding areas when doing safety evaluations with animal caregivers. Must be able to meet the Occupational Health requirements for the position.
