Department Overview

The OHSU Knight Cancer Institute, known as one of the pioneers in personalized cancer medicine, is an international leader in research and cancer treatment. Driven by its mission to end cancer, as we know it, the institute is building upon its expertise in targeted treatments to advance the early detection of cancer when the disease is most treatable. This position will provide support of PK Research lab sample processing. This includes but is not limited to: following Det Norske Veritas (DNV) standards, following OHSU policies regarding lab management and safety, enforcement of procedures for all staff who use the lab, and providing support for research staff as needed in the conduct of clinical research. Strong customer service, organizational, and interpersonal skills are required. Ability to clearly organize and/or adapt to multiple priorities and deadlines at one time is necessary. Attention to detail, service orientation, and critical judgment skills are essential.

Function/Duties of Position

  • Manages time and workload efficiently and prioritizes workflow effectively; able to assess workload and ask for support when appropriate.
  • Communicates & collaborates effectively with all groups within the Knight, Sponsors and Clinic/Hospital Staff.
  • Able to work independently; demonstrates adequate problem-solving skills and awareness of available resources.
  • Specimen Processing: Follows procedures and work practices related to collection, processing, storage, and shipment of research specimens as defined in lab manuals, protocols, and study-specific reference materials.

  • Ensures specimen integrity through appropriate handling and accurate labeling of specimens, related requisitions, and documentation.

  • May be asked to perform Isolation of Circulating Tumor Cells and/or Peripheral Blood

  • Mononuclear Cells from research subjects.

  • Oversee laboratory safety and ensures that the laboratory remains in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations by supporting and enforcing PK laboratory policies and procedures.

  • Maintain laboratory supplies/inventory by checking and logging stock monthly. This includes but is not limited to management of Chemical/Biohazard and sharps inventories and disposal of such items.

  • Research kits: Receives, unpacks, and organizes kits. Works with study teams to order kits as needed. Follows lab manuals and protocols to build research kits and delivers to appropriate locations for draws.

  • Maintain liaison with research personnel and clinic staff to solve specific operating problems and improve technical activities.

  • Additional duties as assigned by Clinical Research Manager or Program Director.

Required Qualifications

Education/Experince:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and no experience
  • OR AA (2yr) and 3 years of relevant experience

  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks at one time
  • Ability to record data accurately
  • Must have excellent communication, analytical and organizational skills: both written and verbal
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team while being collaborative in resolving problems.
  • Must be proficient with computers running Windows and PC applications e.g. MS Excel, Oracle, Access, Word, and PowerPoint). Typing 60wpm
  • Must have demonstrated excellent customer service skills both on the phone and in person
  • Must possess energy and drive to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to maintain effective working relationships

Preferred Qualifications

Education/Experince:

  • Bachelor's degree with coursework in science.
  • Some research knowledge with a minimum of 1-year research experience.
  • 1-year experience working in a lab environment.
  • Working knowledge of advanced scientific techniques and procedures.

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with laboratory techniques
  • Familiarity with solutions and reagents
  • Familiarity with centrifugation, aliquoting and volume measurement
  • Familiarity with medical terminology
