Department Overview

The Stationary Engineer 1 position provides skilled, journey level support for the operation, maintenance and repair of the campus chilled water distribution system and the ancillary equipment needed for the support of these systems. This individual reports to the Energy Manager and works as a part of a functional team within Facilities.

Function/Duties of Position

  • Operates and maintains campus chilled water system, Operates computer terminal to interface with the building automation control system. Maintains accurate operating logs.
  • Performs planned and corrective maintenance on the chilled water utility system including, Chillers, Cooling Towers, centrifugal and positive displacement pumps, Water treatment stations, Refrigerant leak detection, VFD’s, Fan Motors, pneumatic control components, DDC Control components, valves, piping, flow meters, analog gauges, fabricate parts from metal and sheet metal using lathe and drill presses, sheet metal fabrication tools, oxygen acetylene and electrical welding equipment, hydraulic presses and hand tools. Utilizes precision measuring devices including micrometers, calipers, electrical test meters, dial indicators and electronic temperature sensors. Operate Refrigeration charging and recover equipment in accordance with EPA regulations.
  • Performs water analyses to determine the chemical and mechanical water treatment necessary to maintain established parameters and records in the Chemical treatment log.
  • May assist other skilled or journey-level trades people such as Stationary Engineer II’s, sheet metalworkers or welders or facilities technicians in the performance of their tasks.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two years of experience operating and maintaining chilled water systems including chillers, cooling towers and associated pumps, valves. VFDs and meters that show: Knowledge or refrigeration system operations; Knowledge of safety practices while operating and maintaining chilled water systems and auxiliary components; demonstrated knowledge of how to perform chemical analysis of water.

    • Possible substitution of 4 years verifiable relevant experience in commercial/industrial HVACR field service.
    • OR 4 years experience operating an automated utility distribution system such as Potable water distribution, Sewage treatment plant, Electrical distribution or large automated Fire management systems consisting of multiple buildings or campuses utilizing high horsepower centrifugal style pumps and controls.
  • Valid driver’s license

  • Compliance with Code of Conduct, Respect in the workplace and Applicable policies, procedures and agreements related to position, department or OHSU as a whole

  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Training or certification as a Stationary Engineer through one of many available accredited training agencies
  • Experience with building automation control systems; Siemens (Apogee or Desigo) or Johnson Controls (Metasys)
  • E.P.A. Universal certification for handling refrigerants

Additional Details

Pay Range: $39.54 - $46.26 per hour (Commensurate with qualifications, experience and internal equity)

  • May be required to work; dayshift, swing shift or graveyard, any day of the week, including weekends, to support the needs of the department. 24hr On-call rotation as assigned
  • Must be able to work in or around: high levels of noise, extremely high temperatures, dirt, dust, odors, fumes and wet environments, poorly lit areas, bio-hazards, radioactive hazards, moving machinery and confined spaces. Danger of steam and hot water burns, electric shock, infection, lifting and minor injuries. Performs work in confined spaces such as underground utility tunnels, manholes, inside cooling towers using regulations and guidelines in performance of such duties. Required to walk, stand and work while bending and stooping for extended periods. Required to work outdoors in inclement weather. Ability to lift 40 lbs. overhead, ability to lift from floor to waist 75 lbs. unassisted. Ability to climb ladders and elevated walkways, work from extension and “A” frame ladders to 40 ft.
