Department Overview

Are you passionate about advancing cancer research and developing innovative in vitro models? The Franca Lab, a dynamic team within the Division of Biomaterials and Biomedical Sciences at the School of Dentistry, with affiliation to the Knight Cancer Precision Biofabrication Hub, is looking for a motivated and skilled research assistant to join our team.

At The Franca Lab, we study the interactions between early-stage head and neck cancers, the extracellular matrix, vasculature and the immune system using 3D cell culture, microfluidic devices and tissue engineering techniques. As a key member of our team, you will participate in research focused on early cancer biology and 3D cell culture systems. You will have the opportunity to work closely with the principal investigator, co-supervise international graduate students, and tackle challenges independently.

Lab Location: South Waterfront - Portland Oregon

The ideal candidate will hold a bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering, biology, dentistry or cancer research, with a solid background in cell culture, coupled with the ability to manage basic laboratory operations, including instrumentation maintenance, biosafety, lab orders, inventory and general lab support. A strong preference will be given to candidates with hands-on experience in cell culture, 3D models, hydrogels, cancer biology, or immunology. Expertise in organs-on-a-chip technology and imaging is highly desirable. Experience in editing grants and manuscripts is a plus.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Biology, Cancer Biology, Dentistry or related field

  • Able to work independently, conducting biological and engineering related experiments with cells and microfluidic devices
  • Able to stand at a lab bench, sit at a microscope, perform laboratory manipulations, move and carry light lab equipment, perform image analysis experiments, operate computers and related software, communicate easily with co-workers and support staff, assist and instruct other lab members with scientific methods

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience with cancer biology
  • Previous experience in microfluidics, tissue engineering or confocal imaging
  • Previous experience with cell culture, electron and fluorescence microscopy, immunohistochemistry, RT-PCR, ELISA, or spatial transcriptomics
  • Previous experience in establishing protocols and SOPs, lab organization and inventory track
  • Willingness to learn new techniques and procedures
  • Strong problem-solving skills, growth and inclusive mindset, along with the ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented environment
