Department Overview

The OHSU-PSU SPH is aligned with the American Public Health Association in declaring racism a public health crisis, and our School is committed to becoming an antiracist SPH. We are working to center social justice in our internal and external work as a school and are committed to addressing structural and institutional racism, and to holding ourselves accountable to this work.

 

The OHSU-PSU School of Public Health (SPH), Public Health Practice (PHP) program, invites applicants for one full-time 12-month faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor. The position would begin by December 2, 2024. This full time (1.0 FTE) is a unique role focused specifically on supporting the SPH’s 30-30-30 Initiative, aimed at growing the public health workforce by 30% and increasing SPH learner diversity, both by 2030. We are particularly focused on increasing enrollment of students from underserved communities in Oregon most impacted by health inequities and seek a faculty member with expertise and experience engaging and supporting these students so that our public health workforce reflects Oregon’s growing diversity.

 

In this role the faculty member would engage in a mix of graduate-level teaching (.50), serving administratively as the 30-30-30 Faculty Lead (.40) and conducting individual research (0.10 FTE). All faculty are encouraged to establish their own individual research agenda and to pursue independent funding for a portion of their support. In addition to teaching and research, each SPH faculty member is expected to advise and mentor students, contribute to school governance, and engage in collegial activities in support of SPH and OHSU missions.

The appointee shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service.

 

This position reports to (supervisor): Dr. Dawn Richardson, Associate Dean for Academic & Faculty Affairs

Function/Duties of Position

  • Building and supporting the SPH’s 30-30-30 Initiative through programmatic development and curricular design.
  • Coordinating and engaging closely with SPH Student Success Center.
  • Teaching Public Health Practice and interdisciplinary courses at the masters level.
  • Developing, supporting, advising and mentoring 30-30-30 student cohorts.
  • Developing and maintaining scholarship related to public health practice, public health workforce development, and educational diversity efforts.
  • Publishing and/or otherwise disseminating the products of scholarship, including in peer-reviewed venues.
  • Advance the strategic goals of SPH, contribute to the shared governance of the SPH, and engage in collegial activities in support of the SPH missions.

Required Qualifications

  • A doctorate degree (e.g., PhD, ScD, DrPH, DPhil) in public health or a closely related discipline (e.g., social work) by the position start date.

  • Experience with and/or interest in teaching graduate courses covering a variety of public health and public health practice related topics.

  • Strong background in curriculum and program development, specifically geared towards advancing the public health and health equity workforce.

  • Strong pedagogical expertise, specifically for diverse learners in public health or related discipline.

  • Experience

  • Demonstrated ability to teach in remote and asynchronous settings, as well as in-person.

  • Commitment to educational equity and promotion of diversity.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in workforce development efforts for professional students (MPH, MSW, etc.).
  • Experience in academic program direction, development, and assessment.
  • Experience advising and/or mentoring diverse graduate students, including doctoral students.
  • Experience in higher education administration.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a variety of internal and external partners.

  2. A current curriculum vitae,
  3. Copies of two (2) key publications, and
  4. The names, contact information, and professional relationship to candidate for three (3) persons willing to provide a professional reference.

Timeline and Selection Process: Review of applications will begin in Fall 2024 and will continue until the positions are filled. Candidates may be invited to participate in a remote screening interview. Finalists for the position will give a public presentation and may be asked to give a teaching demonstration. References will be contacted only during the final selection process.
