Department Overview

The mission of the Information Technology Group (ITG) is to develop, implement and maintain technology-based services and solutions enabling OHSU to effectively manage information to accomplish its missions.

Function/Duties of Position

OHSU Health operates a network of primary care clinics in the Portland area. These clinics are part of a variety of programs with different objectives and goals. The Primary Care & PopHealth Data Analyst is tasked with creating analytic solutions to help understand problems, devise tools to take action, and evaluate the impact of interventions. Many of the objectives relate performance on quality metrics. Similarly, the performance of the clinic as a whole requires good understanding of the workflows and opportunities for efficiencies in providing care to a large and diverse patient population.

 

The Primary Care & PopHealth Data Analyst will need to be able extract data from the Epic database structure that contains thousands of interconnected tables. To navigate these tables clinical experience, ideally in the primary care setting, provides a broad understanding a what kind of data may be available and what it means. The Primary Care & PopHealth Data Analyst will carry out detailed data analysis and validation, iterating with clinical users and the population health and advanced analytics teams to resolve data gaps or inconsistencies in the reporting solution.  

 

These solutions will be focused in Epic Cogito Analytics, SAP Business Objects and Tableau. The ideal candidate will possess a good understanding of healthcare terminology, strong SQL skills, experience navigating Epic Users web, Epic Record Viewer, Clarity Data Dictionary and Caboodle Data dictionary, as well as experience developing reports using the Epic Caboodle Data Warehouse and Epic Clarity Data model.

 

The institution uses several tools for reporting and visualization including Power BI, Tableau, and SAP Business Objects (Web Intelligence) reporting. Additionally, the team in the Office of Advanced Analytics uses tools like R or Python for adhoc analysis of queried data. 

Required Qualifications

Education: 

Master’s degree in computer science, a related field, or a clinical field and two years work related experience in the information technology field or a combination of clinical or operational healthcare environments; OR

 

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, a related field, or a clinical field and four years work related experience in the information technology field or a combination of clinical or operational healthcare environments; OR

 

Associate’s degree in computer science, a related field, or a clinical field and five years work related experience in the information technology field or a combination of clinical or operational healthcare environments; OR

 

Six years work related experience in the information technology field or a combination of clinical or operational healthcare environments; OR

 

Equivalent combination of education and experience where one year of experience will be substituted for an Associate’s degree and two years of experience will be substituted for a Bachelor’s degree.

 

Experience: 

  • Minimum three years of business analyst experience planning and leading healthcare projects to successful on-time implementations.
  • Minimum of three years experience developing reports and analytic solutions using business intelligence applications, specifically Tableau and SAP Business Objects.
  • Minimum three years data analysis experience with respect to identifying and defining source data using SQL or data profiling tools.
  • Two or more years experience with Epic Healthy Planet Population Health toolset and validation of payer claims integration.
  • Two or more years experience with Epic query tools: record viewer, Reporting Workbench.
  • Experience leading requirements gathering sessions and documenting associated business requirements for large-scale IT projects.
  • Experience creating technical documentation of reports and data models.
  • Experience in working with relational and star-schema data models.
  • Experience with facilitating/leading and testing/QA efforts on BI projects.

Job Related Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Knowledge of Healthcare Clinical data, processes, procedures and workflows.
  • Understanding and knowledge of clinical quality measures.
  • Excellent presentation/facilitation skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple project tasks on an ongoing basis with excellent attention to detail.  
  • Ability to use BI reporting tools to develop reports to support operational and analytical information.
  • Practiced testing techniques and execution.
  • Proven communications, analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to read and explain a data model.
  • Experience with Systems development life cycles processes and procedures.
  • Ability to read, write and understand SQL code.
  • Knowledge of data warehousing architecture.
  • Ability to gather and document business requirements, and manage sub-projects for successful on-time completion.
  • Understanding and enthusiastic support of following processes necessary for business intelligence development through an Agile/SCRUM methodology
