The OHSU Center for Embryonic Cell and Gene Therapy (CECGT) is seeking a Computational Biologist 1 with expertise in data analysis, algorithms, and statistical modeling. The role involves developing and applying computational methods to study biological systems, particularly through next-generation sequencing (NGS) datasets. Working under supervision, the candidate will support CECGT research projects by implementing computational workflows, automating various parts of data analysis, and assisting with creating and maintaining spreadsheets and databases to manage large-scale datasets.

• Data Processing and Post-Analysis
  • Implement computational tools, pipelines, workflows and software packages to discover and annotate both in-house and publicly available omics datasets.
  • Assist with processing, categorizing, and summarizing post-analysis data from already established workflows and pipelines.
  • Automate aspects of data exploration, converting bioinformatics and sequencing data into formats accessible to non-computational team members.
  • Assist with data visualization, ensuring clear communication of results to experimental scientists.
  • Apply sound and commonly accepted statistical methods into analysis of biological data.
  • Help with creating and maintaining CECGT databases.
• NGS Workflows and Pre-Analysis
  • Assist the embryology team and clinical collaborators with research questions related to extracting biological information from high-throughput sequencing datasets.
  • Stay updated on advancements in sequencing technologies and bioinformatics to support CECGT’s research efforts.
  • Provide guidance to non-informatics staff on designing and implementing NGS experiments.
• Academic Output
  • Contribute to sections of presentations, grants, and manuscripts, with review by senior staff and mentors.
  • Assist with preparing oral and poster presentations for scientific meetings and conferences.
• General Research Support:
  • Participate in CECGT activities as needed, including occasional evening or weekend support for assigned projects.
  • Assist with additional duties as assigned to support the CECGT’s mission.

• Master's Degree in Computational Biology or related field OR
• Bachelor's Degree in Computational Biology or related field AND 3 years of relevant experience.
• Experience in processing and analyzing NGS datasets is required. The ideal candidate should have experience in dry-lab bioinformatics and a solid understanding of library preparation techniques, as well as their impact on data output and quality.
• Basic understanding of NGS platforms, especially those using sequencing by synthesis techniques.
• Experience assisting with computational analysis of next-generation sequencing (NGS) datasets, including bulk and single-cell data from human and/or mouse samples.
• Familiarity with common bioinformatics file formats.
• Basic proficiency in R and/or Python, focused on data exploration, processing and visualization.
• Familiarity with working in a Linux environment for basic bioinformatics tasks.
• Experience in discovering, curating, and annotating publicly available omics datasets.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team and follow direction from senior staff.
• Good organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Willingness to learn and improve skills in bioinformatics and computational biology.
• Ability to manage basic tasks independently while seeking help when needed.
