Department Overview

The function of the Ultrasonographer position within the Division of Perinatology is to perform medical sonography for OB/GYN procedure based care and pregnancy viability. The ultrasonographer promotes OHSU's mission statement by delivering high quality, cost effective, family-oriented service. This position helps to create a collaborative environment by integrating education, research and clinical leadership. This Sonographer position works only with patients at the division's Warm Springs location and is expected to be scheduled 1-2 days per month.

Function/Duties of Position

  • Ultrasound procedures
    • Performs abdominal and transvaginal OB/GYN scanning, including Dopplers and nuchal translucency.
    • Optimizes each image during the examination to obtain the highest quality study with the least discomfort to the patient
    • Assists the physician in invasive and/or specialized procedures, such as amniocentesis
    • Provides quality real time 2D, 3D, M Mode and Doppler applications to acquire images, using optimal skills and knowledge of equipment.
  • Documentation
    • Verifies complete documentation of all pertinent information to provide accurate and timely service to customers.
    • Verifies and initials orders in patient chart, Responsible for correctly identify patients by complying with Imaging dept. Patient Identification Policy.
    • Labels images completely with patient demographics, position or other required documentation.
    • Follows through with all aspects of scanning duties in order to provide efficient and timely completion of examinations with correct data entry, begin and complete with correct billing and verification that images are in PACS.
  • Personal & Patient Care and Safety
    • Provides for personal and patient care and safety using professional judgment in accordance with written standards to avoid injury to self and others.
    • Responsible to adhere to all established JCAHO National Patient Safety Goals, and report errors or unsafe conditions to supervisor and the OHSU Event Reporting (Patient Safety Net).
    • Follows universal precautions for blood and body fluids, protecting patients and staff.
  • Effective use of resources
    • Assists in scheduling examinations and assists the receptionist in planning work schedules.
    • Assists with moving or transporting patients if needed.
    • Participates in teaching technical and clinical skills to residents.
  • Keeps equipment and work areas neat and clean
    • Performs quality control on diagnostic equipment and maintains a logbook for weekly entries as needed.
    • Maintains adequate par levels of all supplies

    • Practices professional communications, appearance, conduct, punctuality, attendance and attitude that leads to physician, patient, and co-worker respect and confidence.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of an approved diagnostic medical sonography course that meets current qualifications to apply for and take ARDMS board examinations upon hire.
  • Candidates must be American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) registered in OB/GYN and Abdomen within 12 months of hire date. Must be licensed by the Oregon Board of Medical Imaging. Must have current approved CPR Card.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in general Ultrasound from an accredited school.
  • Ability to perform all phases of general diagnostic sonography. Will consider new student graduates.2 years in a large hospital or physician practice a plus.

  • Women’s health experience a plus.

  • Good judgment, decision making and communication skills. 
  • Proficient in the use of various ultrasound units. 
  • Able to demonstrate specific normal anatomy and abnormal pathology. 
  • Have a working knowledge of ultrasound physics and principles.
  • RVT encouraged.
