Department Overview

The Licensed Practice Nurse (LPN) will assist the physician with patient care and follow-up providing direct and indirect patient care in a clinical setting of the Urology Clinic. Duties include, but not limited to, interviewing patients, obtaining vital signs, preparing patients and assisting physicians with patient exams and/or treatment. Continuing responsibilities include charting and preparing charts for clinic as necessary. Additionally, the LPN will perform triage with patient phone calls to identify emergent and non-emergent situations. The LPN will help facilitate patient flow through the Urology Clinic and ensure an accurate and complete medical record for each patient. The LPN assists the medical provider by coordinating departmental resources regarding tests, orders, radiology and results.

 

Additional responsibilities may include
1) Providing specific customer services which include screening for financial eligibility, confirming health insurance coverage and obligations, obtaining necessary authorizations for care, and scheduling appointments;
2) Facilitating communication between providers and the patient (e.g. prescription refills, return to work and FMLA forms completion, patient education, patient longitudinal follow up and tracking, etc.)
3) provide education regarding disease, medications, procedures or other aspects of patient care based on protocols and pre-pared educational materials.

 

Under the direction and supervision of a Licensed Independent Practitioner and in accordance with hospital policies and procedures, the LPN provides basic care as a member of the patient care team. Patient care activities are related to rooming, measuring, recording, and reporting patient information and performing simple treatments, procedures and . The LPN assists in maintaining the practice environment in a clean, orderly condition including cleaning and stocking rooms. Participates in ongoing professional development and competency assessment, and participates in ongoing quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives. Performs requirements for Staff Members as outlined in Compliance Roles and Responsibilities in OHSU Hospitals and Clinics.


This position performs in a manner, which maintains the confidentiality and privacy of each patient, promotes positive health habits through appearance and attitude. Supports and adheres to the Code of Conduct and Policies and Procedures of both OHSU hospital and clinics and the Department of Urology, models ethical and appropriate behavior, professional standards, compliance and personal integrity.

 

Pay Range: $26.60 - $35.98 per hour

Function/Duties of Position

Clinical Care

  • Prepares and rooms the patient for exam by obtaining vital signs and documenting/updating pertinent health information (i.e. chief complaint, allergies, and medications, and Review of Systems and the Past, Family and/or Social History).
  • Obtain labs and semen testing from IVF Centers as needed.  Coordinates genetic testing for patients. Arranges follow-up and imaging and coordination of care for each patient.
  • Assists the physician/provider with procedures. Assists providers with ordering any additional diagnostic studies at facilities both inside and outside of OHSU. Obtains outside results and routes to ordering provider to medically review for direction on next step of care.  
  • Provides basic patient education on the performance of tasks, skills, treatment and self-care. Follows through with necessary procedure or test requests, prescription refills, new appointment times and referrals to other facilities or services. Refers questions to registered nurses and providers per scope of practice guidelines and relays information back to patient as directed.
  • Communicates with physicians and other members of the health care team. Documents and communicates accurate and timely information regarding patient conditions.
  • Organizes and prepares exam rooms, lab and work areas including: cleaning, stocking, ordering supplies, and maintaining equipment. Performs various patient positioning and transporting duties, which require lifting and pushing/pulling, while utilizing proper technique.
  • Completes routine maintenance and quality monitoring of clinic equipment using appropriate technique when cleaning, sterilizing and caring for instruments and other equipment. 

Program Support

  • Telecommunications: Respond to program specific telephone calls; accurately documents and relays any messages; processes any requests for medication refills as directed by provider; directs calls of complaint, requests for information, urgent health care concerns and general inquiries to appropriate source.
  • My Chart: Assist with responding to patients inquiries by acting as a liaison between the provider and the patient.
  • Referrals: Act as a community liaison with regional fertility clinics to strengthen relationships with these referral sources and patients and provide exceptional service and timely responses. 
  • Other administrative: Secures pertinent outside medical records and any existing pertinent imaging prior to patient appointment and documents in EPIC what was requested. Completes return to work letters. Prepares FMLA and Disability forms for the providers. Assists in the development and revision of teaching handouts for patients, families and staff.

Professional Development

  • Maintains personal records of continuing education and maintains records of mandatory annual in-services.
  • Attends lectures, workshops and meeting related to clinical areas.
  • Participates in in-services and education programs
  • Attends staff meetings.

Other duties as assigned by Manager 

Required Qualifications

  • LPN-Oregon Practical Nurse License at the time of appointment

  • Must have BLS at the time of hire

  • Previous work experience in a high volume surgical outpatient clinic, including previous work experience with multi-line phones.

  • Knowledge and experience assisting in clinic based procedures.

  • Basic math skills;

  • Working knowledge and understanding of medical terminology;

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.

  • Strong patient oriented customer service, including working with a diverse patient population.

  • Demonstrated problem solving and negotiation skills in resolving patient concerns.

  • Detail oriented;

  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task;

  • Excellent written and verbal communication;

  • Professional appearance;

  • Strong computer skills, knowledge and experience.

  • Must have a positive attitude and be a team player.

  • Ability to perform the job duties with or without accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience with electronic medical records, including EPIC.
  • Verifiable experience working in surgery clinic. 

  • Familiar with JCAHO and OSHA standards.
