The Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine is integral to the healthcare, education and research missions at OHSU. We provide clinical services at OHSU hospitals and collaborate with the VA Portland Health Care System and Hillsboro Medical Center. We specialize in providing excellent perioperative care and anesthesia services to our patients using state-of-the-art technology and pharmacologic tools with an emphasis on patient safety. Pre-operative assessment is facilitated by electronic data collecting systems and is integral to minimizing patient risk. In the operating rooms our anesthesiologists work in care teams with our fellows, residents, and nurse anesthetists as well as independently. Pre- and post-operative care is under the medical supervision of our department. We play a prominent role in the caring for patients in the cardiovascular, neurosciences, and virtual intensive care units. In the ICU our team includes anesthesiology intensivists, critical care fellows, physician assistants/nurse practitioners, and residents. The role of our team in the ICUs is comprehensive and critical to achieving the highest quality outcomes for our patients.
Vice Chair, Quality & Safety (0.2 FTE)
This position reports to the Chair for the Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine (APOM). The Vice Chair of Quality & Safety oversees, organizes, and implements the quality assessment and improvement missions of the department by serving as the Chair of the Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) Critical Events and Peer Review committee, reviewing and identifying root system causes of quality and safety issues within the department, identifying areas and strategies for improvement, and working with other departments within the hospital system to develop strategies for ensuring high quality care. The Vice Chair will work closely with the department’s quality improvement administrative team to maintain an active quality program that is responsive to the changing needs of the department and hospital.
In addition to fulfilling all the expectations for an APOM Vice Chair*, responsibilities of the Vice Chair of Quality & Safety include, but are not limited to:
• Engage in departmental strategic planning efforts. Develop annual goals for quality.
• Serve as CQI committee chair.
• Review and triage all incident reports, lead the review process and provide feedback to involved parties.
• Communicate CQI case findings and recommendations to appropriate members of APOM, OHSU Quality and Risk Management staff, Office of the Patient Advocate, and other clinical departments.
• Directly guide and communicate with the APOM site-specific Directors of Quality: ICUs (NSICU, CVICU), Comprehensive Pain Center (CPC), Perioperative Medicine Clinic (PMC), Non-Operating Room Anesthesia (NORA), Centers for Health Healing (CHH) outpatient surgery center, Doernbecher Children’s Hospital (DCH), Labor and Delivery Anesthesia (L&D).
• Present five minute QI update at each internal GR including quality and safety reminders / updates, compliance and safety data
• Guide clinical documentation and compliance practice as it relates to pertinent preoperative evaluation, intraoperative documentation, and post-operative evaluation in cooperation with the appropriate clinical Vice Chair, by making documentation suggestions to the Epic Anesthesia change management group.
• Working within available data sources (e.g. Epic, MPOG, CMS, UHC) collaborate with leading local (e.g. APOM epidemiologist(s) and informaticist(s), DMICE, Center for Health Systems Effectiveness Department of Public Health & Preventative Medicine, OCTRI, The Pacific NW Evidence Based Practice Center) and national (e.g. AQI, collaborators from U Penn, MPOG) investigators to critically evaluate our practice and create new knowledge to Collaborate with health-system quality and safety leaders to help OHSU to consistently be in the top 10th percentile for University Healthcare Consortium (UHC) outcomes.
• Collaborate with the Vice Chair for Education in guiding the work of the Director for Resident QI Curriculum and the Director of Resident QI projects to ensure each graduating APOM resident fulfills their ACGME requirements for Quality and Safety. Assist with determination of resident QI projects, assignments, project supervision and project mentoring.
• Serve as QI leader on the APOM MACRA/MIPS committee. Supervise development of MACRA/MIPS metrics, track and supervise submission of yearly MACRA/MIPS documentation.
• Partner with clinical Vice Chairs to oversee the OPPE process for APOM providers, as assigned by the Chair.
• Develop meeting agenda and promote productive discussion among all members of the APOM quality/safety division.
• Provide assistance to APOM faculty members for disclosure of adverse events.
• Work with other divisions and departments within OHSU to identify, track and improve care delivery on a systems level to assure the highest possible quality and outcome,
• Develop expertise in and support OPEx management strategies to improve Clinical Efficiency as a supplemental quality indicator.
• Maintain confidentiality with all case data and peer review data.
*Requirements for Vice Chair positions:
A Vice Chair is a senior member of the Department and will have achieved the rank of Professor or be a highly experienced Associate Professor. They must exhibit a commitment to achieve excellence in service, education, and scholarship. They will be established or developing leadership competencies with national recognition and organizational engagement. In addition to meeting the requirements specific to their position, they must demonstrate commitment to supporting all institutional missions: research, education, and patient care.

Adult Generalist Anesthesiologist (0.8 FTE)
This position reports to the Vice Chair for Clinical Anesthesia in the Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine (APOM). The appointee shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the University's missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service. Appointee shall have a demonstrated competence in patient care and teaching/mentorship. The most desired candidate will also have interest/experience in research/scholarship/discovery and/or administrative leadership.
Teaches trainees and support staff in their area of professional expertise. Teaching is done through assigned lectures to be given during the course of the year and through teaching in the course of performing their own job by modeling best practices, mentoring trainees, guiding learning through delegating graduated and focused levels of responsibility. Faculty have a demonstrated competence in teaching and are knowledgeable about relevant guidelines from all applicable regulating bodies. (E.g. ACGME competencies for clinical faculty).
Provides an outstanding level of professional performance (e.g. quality of clinical care for clinical faculty). Professional performance is to be delivered in a manner that is compliant with the regulations and guidelines of all relevant regulating bodies (e.g. the American Society of Anesthesiologists, JCAHO, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, OHSU IRB, NIH and all other state, federal, and institutional regulatory guidelines). Treats all patients, research subjects, trainees and co-workers with dignity and respect.
May maintain a program of scholarly research activity directed toward improved understanding of the causes, detection, and treatment of diseases. May develop and direct scholarly research activities focused toward improving the educational foundation within anesthesiology and perioperative medicine. May engage in public service through consultative activities with OHSU and non-University groups as approved by the Chair. May also participate in additional departmental or hospital administration as approved by the Chair.
• Candidates must have successfully completed a doctorate of medicine or osteopathy and residency training in Anesthesiology.
• Candidates must have or be eligible for an Oregon Medical Board license, appropriate OHSU medical staff appointment and specialty board certification through the ABA with participation in MOCA
• The successful candidate will also have faculty experience including demonstrated competence in patient care and teaching, possess organizational and administrative qualifications and have the ability to function effectively within institutional governance
• Significant academic achievements in anesthesiology, including recent and ongoing publications
• Must use their excellent communication skills and professionalism in all interactions
