Department Overview

The Department of Psychiatry is recruiting for a Research Associate / Telephone Health Coach. 

Function/Duties of Position

The Telephone Health Coach works with Dr. Travis Lovejoy on a NIDA-funded multisite clinical trial that tests the efficacy of a multicomponent primary care-based intervention aimed at polysubstance use disorder, including opioid, stimulant, sedative, and alcohol use disorders. OHSU, in conjunction with UCLA, will oversee the behavioral telehealth component of this intervention. Telephone Health Coaches will be trained to deliver a manualized intervention informed by principles of Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Telephone Health Coaches will engage in weekly supervision and community learning calls with nurse care managers located at each study site. This position is eligible for 100% telework.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in relevant field AND 3 years of relevant experience OR Bachelor's Degree in relevant field AND 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Demonstrates creativity and problem solving ability.
  • Exercises judgment in taking independent action, and seeks advice as necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in health coaching and behavior change interventions, including Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, highly preferred.
  • Preferred qualifications include prior experience working with patients who have polysubstance use disorders.
  • Close consideration will be given to applicants who:
    • Possess a degree in social work, counseling, nursing, or other allied health profession OR In the absence of such a degree, have experience and/or interest working with patients.
