Department Overview

This position will practice at Hillsboro Medical Center and be a faculty member at Oregon Health & Science University. The Division of Vascular Surgery at OHSU provides excellent patient care while maintaining educational and research-rich programs that train surgeons and researchers and enhance their understanding of the vascular system. A special interest in quality outcomes and measurement drives much of the division's research they offer a 2-year vascular and endovascular surgery fellowship as well as an integrated residency program. OHSU's vascular surgeons operate out of the Knight Cardiovascular Institute.

 

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is a faculty member credentialed and privileged as a Physician Assistant (PA). The APP is a member of the Hillsboro Professional Staff and OHSU Professional Staff practicing in accordance with the respective bylaws. The APP shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service. The APP is expected to comply with scope of practice, other laws, regulations, OHSU policy, and other applicable professional standards of practice.

 

Our specialized vascular surgery team focuses on treating diseases of the arteries, including carotid artery disease, aortic aneurysms, peripheral artery disease, vein problems, and other vascular-related issues. As an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) in our Division, you will join a thriving clinic that includes a team of Vascular Surgeons and other APPs. You will be part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team, contributing to patient care, patient safety, quality improvement, and teaching. You will manage patients with various diagnoses associated with vascular diseases and conditions.

Function/Duties of Position

1) Clinical Responsibilities

 

a) Inpatient Responsibilities

Providing inpatient care and follow-up of assigned patients from OR to admission, and through discharge at multiple surgical locations, including OHSU and primarily Hillsboro Medical center for Vascular Surgery patients Includes, but is not limited to: rounding on a daily basis with the faculty, developing and implementing, in conjunction with faculty physicians, clinical plans of care and/or protocols for inpatients on the Vascular Surgery service with common conditions/diagnoses/procedures; educating the house staff and nursing unit staff on these protocols, with the goal of enhancing quality of care, enhancing quality of patient services, and decreasing length of inpatient stay; participating with hospital/unit staff in evaluating results of these protocols and continually improving effectiveness of same; working actively with hospital and unit staff to rapidly develop and implement discharge plans for inpatients Vascular Surgery service and to address length of stay issues; promoting and maintaining health of inpatients on the Vascular Surgery service through the use of ancillary services, educational materials, and counseling of patients and families; providing resident and intern training/education in utilization of plans of care to improve patient services and outcomes of treatment; providing and/or participating in clinical in-service training and staff educational programs for the inpatient service. Following all customer service standards as outlined above.

 

b) Operating Room Responsibilities - Assistant Duties

Provide operating room and procedural assistance to Vascular surgeons as determined by the Division Head or their designee(s). Includes assistance in performing laparoscopic and robotic surgeries to include, bariatric sleeves gastrectomy, gastric bypass, duodenal switch, foregut, colorectal, and vascular procedures.

 

c) Outpatient Responsibilities

Take comprehensive histories and perform physical examinations for patients in our Heart and Vascular Surgery clinic. Evaluate and treat based on history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results. Assess, diagnose, and manage outpatients with vascular symptoms, including addressing would care. Initiate referrals to other health care providers and/or consult with the attending physician or the collaborating physician. Document and bill for direct care provided. Utilize current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice.


2) General Responsibilities

 

a) Teaching

Providing teaching of Surgery surgical and diagnostic treatments to medical students, interns, residents, inpatient general surgery nursing staff, and other Division support staff on the inpatient and/or outpatient service. Providing and/or participating in clinical in-services and staff educational programs for the outpatient & inpatient General Surgery service.

 

b) Call Coverage
Provide pager coverage on some weeknights Monday through Thursday, and OR call coverage on occasional weekends which includes Saturday morning rounds, on a variable rotating basis.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree as required by specific Advanced Practice Provider role.
  • Registration with the Oregon Board of Medical Examiners as a licensed Physician Assistant, license from the Oregon Board of Nursing; Drug Enforcement Association certification required
