The Oregon Institute of Occupational Health Sciences is an independent research institute within OHSU that is dedicated to health and safety in the workplace. The Institute receives its base funding from the Oregon Workers’ Compensation Fund and leverages this base funding to secure federal government grants in basic, clinical, and applied research. We perform biomedical/occupational research and innovation for a healthy workforce, aimed at promoting health and reducing disease and disability among workers across the nation, particularly in Oregon.

This position will work on projects under the direction of Leslie B Hammer, Ph.D. Her current research is focused on the health and well-being of farmworkers, approximately 78% of which identify as Latine/Hispanic. The position is funded for two years through a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, with the possibility of extending beyond that time if additional funding is obtained. Dr. Hammer is leading a team to study the effects of a recent bill to provide overtime pay to agricultural workers, which had previously been denied to them. 

 

The Community Research Associate (CRA), who will come from or have extensive experience with the study population, will assist the team with translation assistance in Spanish, providing contextual information on the community and their lived experiences.

 

The CRA will work closely with community-based organizations (CBOs) in identifying potential participants, assist in setting up focus groups, and assist with data collection efforts, including consenting individuals; this person will also assist with the interpretation of various research materials and information collected from farmworker participants. They will be expected to manage a variety of tasks, being able to prioritize multiple assignments; they should be able to work independently but also in collaboration with a team, often remotely. The CRA will have the opportunity to build a marketable skill set in research. This is a part-time position with the potential to work additional hours as needed.

• Master’s degree in relevant field AND 2 years of relevant experience OR
• Bachelor’s degree in relevant field and 4 years of relevant experience
• 2 – 4 years of relevant experience working with and/or coming from a Hispanic/Latine community
• Fluency in Spanish, both written and spoken
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs
• Exceptional organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities
• Knowledge and application of gathering, compiling, and reporting research information
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills, writing and proof-reading skills
• Ability to exercise discretion when dealing with issues of a sensitive nature and to maintain research integrity
• Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines

• Experience with agricultural workers in the Pacific Northwest
• Experience with Central American indigenous languages
• Experience with survey data collection
• Experience with qualitative data collection (e.g., focus groups, interviews)
• Ability to gather, compile, analyze and maintain, in a range of formats, information from a variety of sources, including research publications, web sources, and internal and external contacts
• Familiarity and/or experience with trauma-based research
• Valid driver’s license
