Department Overview

The Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC) is located 12 miles west of the OHSU main campus, and sits on 162 acres of land featuring forested areas, research and administration buildings, indoor and outdoor animal housing, and 2-mile perimeter walking path. Our mission is to improve human health and the quality of life through the support of nonhuman primate research programs that advance our knowledge of the causes, preventions, treatments, and cures of debilitating diseases.

Function/Duties of Position

The Facilities Technician provides assistance and support to journeyman level trades workers by performing a wide variety of skilled and unskilled tasks. Inspect, maintain, and repair facilities and building-related systems and equipment at the Oregon National Primate Research Center. Tasks, in such areas as plumbing, refrigeration, HVAC, carpentry, and building maintenance are usually routine in nature and limited in difficulty. Must be able to work independently when performing routine work and minor repairs. Perform assignments on the basis of emergency calls, work orders, routine, preventative and major maintenance.

 

Key Responsibilities & Performance Standards

 

Maintenance Repair Activities: Performs general preventive or corrective maintenance tasks pertaining to building maintenance, including changing HVAC filters, changing fan belts, checking motor timing, testing control systems. Intermediate knowledge of hand tools and shop tools, fabricates parts, can work independently. Experience in plumbing, Quip water systems for animal areas, mechanical, HVAC systems and components, gas packs, commercial air conditioners, fan units, gas packs units, chillers, freezers, evaporators. Knowledge of indoor/outside heaters for animal spaces. Variety of maintenance skill sets. Maintains and repairs shop tools and equipment. Has the ability to read and interpret blue prints, OEM’s. Trains the Assistant Facilities Technicians and assists the Senior Facilities Technicians in maintaining and repairing of building mechanical equipment.

 

Team Oriented Activities: Work cooperatively and coordinate work with Facilities Manager and other OHSU employees to assure efficient and reliable service

 

Plumbing Activities: Makes simple repairs on old plumbing such as renewing washers and valves; cleaning and opening drains and other water lines, misters, sprinklers, and unclogs clogged drains with a snake. Assists licensed plumber in installing new plumbing including pipes, drains, faucets, and other plumbing fixtures and equipment.

 

System Troubleshooting: Interprets system drawings, schematics and manuals     to troubleshoot and optimize system operation. Understands system isolation mechanisms. Determines system or equipment problems and engage appropriate specialists (e.g. Building Automation System or Fire Alarm Technicians, Electricians) to resolve the problem

 

Contractor Support: Works with contractors to facilitate badging and key request processes; escort them through buildings; fully understand building impacts from proposed work; and understand and communicate building system shutdowns and impairments. Participate in system commissioning process at the end of new system installation. Receive training on new systems and pass information to other team members as needed

 

Carpentry Activities: Assists in general maintenance and construction work of a simple nature such as installing shelving, hanging doors (other than specialty construction), framing walls. Requires the use of simple power tools such as drills, saws, and planes.

 

Perform other maintenance related tasks as assigned

Required Qualifications

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent

Experience:

  • Three years of facilities maintenance or trades related experience

    Experience Substitutions:

    • Two completed years of building maintenance experience can substitute for two of the three years of experience required above OR Successful completion of a Facilities Maintenance technical training program may substitute for one of the three years of experience required above

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):

  • Computer skills: beginning - intermediate

Registrations, Certifications and/or Licenses:

  • Driver’s license required

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Trade, technical or military school training

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work in extreme weather conditions
  • Work in confined and cramped locations
  • Climb up and down stairs
  • Climb A frame ladders up to 16 feet and extension ladders up to 40 feet
  • Work from scaffolding and elevated platforms
  • Work may involve exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals, biological agents and potentially hazardous items such as steam pipes, electrical wiring, icy roofs and power machines and tools
  • Follow all OHSU required safety procedures during operation and maintenance of building system
  • Utilize appropriate personal protection equipment as needed and required
  • Occasional mandatory call back work and/or overtime. Will at some point, join the technician on-call program

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & EQUIPMENT USAGE: 

  • Must be able to lift materials from floor to waist up to 75 lbs
  • Lift materials over head up to 50 lbs. unassisted
  • Capable of working shifts in excess of 8 hours
