Department Overview

The OHSU Casey Eye Institute (Casey) Community Outreach Program supports Casey’s mission to end preventable blindness in Oregon, and broader goals of OHSU2025. As a donor-funded program with a mission to serve communities who experience barriers to basic vision care across Oregon, this position provides critical operation and driving duties to ensure the safe operation(s) of the program’s Mobile Health Units (MHUs), in coordination with program staff.

Function/Duties of Position

Mobile Health Unit (MHU) Driving Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the safe operation of the CEI MHUs throughout Oregon.
  • Ability to set up, operate load, and unload RV equipment (leveling jacks, generator, HVAC, shore power, etc.)
  • Follows all Federal, State, and Local laws in regards to motor vehicle operation and safety.
  • Ensure equipment is securely stored to reduce damage to equipment and vehicle.
  • Adheres to all departmental, parking, and safety policies and procedures in the operation of motor vehicles.
  • Commonly transported materials including people, office and medical supplies/equipment, event materials, and other items.
  • Responsible for maintaining timeliness of route and adjusting as needed to traffic or weather conditions.
  • Responsible for maintaining integrity of materials throughout the transportation chain.
  • Properly operates OHSU-owned and leased vehicles, in accordance with all Federal, State, and local laws, as well as departmental policy and procedure.
  • Completes daily vehicle inspections and documents as necessary.
  • Reports and discrepancies to appropriate coordinator or management team member.
  • Responsible for assisting in maintaining the cleanliness of the interior and exterior of vehicles operated.
  • May be asked to install snow chains during inclement weather events.
  • Provide general troubleshooting assistance for the vehicle/lift.
  • Ensuring electrical panel and batteries are correctly powered up and down at the start/end of events.
  • Manage fueling and fuel card.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation

Community Clinic Support

  • Assist in vehicle and screening equipment set up on-site.
  • Set up and breakdown interior equipment, including ophthalmic exam equipment.
  • Assists volunteers in setting up screening stations (check-in, autorefractor & lensometer, DA, NA, refraction, tech, frames, checkout stations, etc.)
  • Serve as professional representative of OHSU and the outreach program
  • Providing support to volunteers and participants regarding clinic/program operations, supplies/equipment locations and helping to ensure they have a positive and rewarding experience.
  • Assist participants with egress to and from the mobile health unit.
  • Assist with cleaning interior of MHUs pre/post event.

Other duties as assigned by program staff, or physician on site.

Required Qualifications

Professional Experience: 6 months of professional driving experience using vehicles such as sedans, vans, and box trucks. Current Driver’s license and driving record that meets OHSU’s driving requirements. Basic computer skills and familiarity with MS Office.

 

Education: High School or GED equivalent.

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a team with great accuracy and efficiency. Demonstrated ability to take initiative and complete projects independently.
  • Ability to work with diverse individuals including volunteers, medical professionals, students, underserved populations, patients, and community partners. 
  • Ability to operate and communicate effectively and professionally.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience driving large vehicles and/or RVs.
  • Experience working with volunteers, and/or community service/engagement.
