Department Overview

The OHSU Department of Surgery is comprised of nine integrated yet independent surgery divisions: Abdominal Organ Transplantation, Bariatric, Cardiothoracic, Gastrointestinal and General, Pediatric, Plastic and Reconstructive, Oncology, Trauma and Acute Care and Vascular Surgery. Our department is built on a culture of community and a history of innovative and interdisciplinary collaboration. Our faculty are dedicated to excellence in education, research, scholarship and clinical practice. We also house one of the largest general surgery residency programs in the country and offer surgery fellowships in all of our disciplines. OHSU as a teaching hospital is fully supported by each of our faculty and staff.

Function/Duties of Position

  • Customer Service – Provides high quality customer service to both external customers (patient, referring providers, and insurance carriers) and internal customers (OHSU health care providers and staff) that meets or exceeds the service standards of the health care industry.  This duty includes prompt and professional communication efforts, face-to-face customer contact skills, crisis management, facility with available information, technology, standard complaint processing, flexible coverage of internal service needs, and the continuous application of process improvement methods and skills.
  • Clinical Service Resource – Shares PAS expertise and disseminates information to other PAS personnel within the Department of Surgery.  Serves as an expert user of available systems and internet sites.  Maintains working knowledge of diagnostic and procedural coding appropriate for the service area.  Maintains PAS Specialist skills in the areas of enrollment and authorization, arranged care, point-of-service operations, integrated care, and telecommunications.  Provides direct customer service in a PAS Specialist role as needed to support the nine divisions of the Department of Surgery.  May be required to fill subordinate PAS roles, as needed to provide ongoing operational support to the nine division of the Department of Surgery.  When necessary, communicates directly with patients or other customers who have encountered difficulty accessing health care at OHSU.  Is an ambassador for the Department of Surgery and OHSU.
  • Personnel Coordination – Is available to assist with orientation of new PAS employees, providing training resources that are continually updated as changes occur.  Provides clinical management with necessary support to ensure new employees have the tools and access needed to perform their roles.  
  • Clinical Operations Monitoring – Investigates claim denials, at the direction of the Revenue Cycle Manager, to provide feedback on process improvement and denial resolution.

Required Qualifications

  • Two years of front-line clerical experience in a clinical setting with direct patient contact. Experience must include scheduling of appointments and requires experience obtaining managed care authorizations.
  • EPIC appointment scheduling, usage of DAR reports and knowledge of insurance websites.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or Advanced Degree.
  • Surgery scheduling.
