Department Overview

The Health Unit Coordinator is part of the health care team and utilizes her/his knowledge and expertise to support nursing area/unit operations throughout OHSU. The Health Unit Coordinator's primary responsibility is to enhance the patient experience, both by facilitating communication with healthcare providers and by addressing patient needs as he/she is able. The Health Unit Coordinator also maintains an accurate and current profile of patients and health care team members in multiple locations: census boards, computers, call lists and charts. The Health Unit Coordinator acts as a communications specialist, providing secretarial and reception skills, computer entry services, and organizational and problem-solving expertise.

 

The Float Pool HUC works in all nursing units within the Patient Care Services Division. This includes adult and pediatric units, acute care, critical care, psychiatry and emergency.

Function/Duties of Position

  • Support patient and family centered care across the continuum through service coordination.
  • Prioritize unit secretary responsibilities and seek consultation when indicated. Perform area specific skills and follow established protocols.
  • Obtain follow up appointments for discharging patients as requested.
  • Recognize and respond to emergent situations
  • Communicate in a respectful, caring and non-judgmental manner
  • Demonstrate fiscal accountability and the effective use of resources
  • Assume responsibility for professional / job related development, knowledge of advances in technology, use of new equipment and appropriate application of hospital systems. Maintain knowledge base essential to the role of Health Unit Coordinator.
  • Demonstrate performance consistent with Departmental, Divisional and Organizational expectations and core competency

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • One year of clerical and/or related health care experience or a combination of experience and training
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology, abreviations and symbols.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task.
  • Ability to write and speak fluent English.
  • Compliance with Code of Conduct, Respect in the workplace and Applicable policies, procedures and agreements related to position, department or OHSU as a whole

  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some college preferred
  • Previous hospital or clerical experience preferred
  • National HUC Certification

Additional Details

Pay Range: $21.81 - $29.09 per hour

  • Frequent assignments with tight time frames. Frequent need to prioritize and multitask. Frequent exposure to excited and/or upset people. Usual hospital environmental conditions.
  • Frequent need to sit and answer phone for extended periods of time. Frequent need to keyboard for extended periods of time. Occasional need to lift under 50#. Frequent need to walk around nursing units and facility to assist patients and their families, obtain supplies and/or locate staff. Frequent twisting from the waist to reach supplies and/or patient charts.
