Department Overview

This position reports to the Hillsboro Medical Director of Diagnostic Radiology and to the Departmental Chair of Diagnostic Radiology (DR). The purposes of the role are to (1) perform image-guided procedures and fluoroscopy (2) work with and provide guidance to Radiology nurses and technologists in the preparation of patients for image guided procedures, (3) supervision of aftercare, (4) work collaboratively with clinic management on process improvement projects.

Function/Duties of Position

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Perform a wide range of image-guided procedures including, but not limited to, US-guided paracentesis, thoracentesis, thyroid and superficial fine needle aspiration biopsies, fluoroscopic hysterosalpingogram, ultrasound-sonohysterogram, contrast enhanced ultrasound, CT procedures,.
  • Perform and interpret a range of procedures including, but not limited to, GI fluoroscopy procedures (esophagram, upper GI, feeding tube manipulation, contrast enema, cystogram, fistulogram).
  • Supervise moderate sedation administered by radiology RNs and oversee mild sedation/anxiolytics when needed.
  • Supervise procedure-related recovery and respond to complications, coordinating clinical care, consultation, admission or ED-transfer.
  • Help manage preprocedural medical issues in coordination with radiology RNs and consultation with radiologists such as anticoagulation, antibiotics, allergies, etc.
  • Work closely with Xray, US, CT, MRI radiology lead techs and managers to implement process improvement
  • Communicate with attending physicians regarding a patient's condition, treatment plans, and urgent medical needs.
  • Communicate with patients and family regarding their imaging findings. Review imaging as appropriate with patients.
  • Adhere to best practice protocols and OHSU/HMC specific policies.
  • Obtain training and education on safe use of fluoroscopy and radiation safety precautions, and medical staff credentialing approval for signing orders.

Education:

  • Collaborate with radiology team members to establish or revise clinical pathways and patient education materials.
  • Work with clinic and hospital staff to optimize order sets, patient instructions, and other infrastructure that supports patient care.

Leadership and Administration (included if APP will be Lead or Manager):

  • Participate in the onboarding plan and oversight of new Advanced Practice Providers.
  • Maximize communication of APPs in inpatient and outpatient settings through regular meetings and communication.
  • Participate in recruitment and hiring of new APPs.
  • Work with the APPs to facilitate understanding and consensus regarding proposed changes in departmental and OHSU policies, procedures, practices, and APP roles within the practice.
  • Work with clinic staff and division management process improvement efforts towards meeting institutional targets of high quality, cost-efficient patient management.
  • Assist HR with recruitment efforts.

Quality and Research:

  • Promote use of appropriate research findings in practice to exceed the standards of care.
  • Work with the physician leadership, nurse managers, nursing staff and social workers to prevent and/or respond to patient complaints.
  • Effectively manage clinic resources.

Required Qualifications

  • Candidates must have or obtain a State of Oregon Physician Associate license.
  • Candidates must have or be willing to obtain a Limited Fluoroscopy Permit through Oregon Medical Board of Imaging within one year of hire.
  • ACLS/BLS certification required.
  • Membership in professional organization recommended.
  • Fluoroscopy Requirements:
    • The applicant already possesses or will obtain a limited fluoroscopy permit through the Oregon Board of Medical Imaging within 1 year of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Radiology experience preferred or if none, procedural and/or clinical surgical experience
