Department Overview

This position reports to (supervisor): Chair, Dept of Neurology and Head, Division of Aging and Alzheimer’s Disease

The Department of Neurology is one of the nation’s top neurologic research and training programs, with one-of-a-kind laboratories and nine fellowship programs. OHSU has a tradition of excellence in neurology medicine, research and education that stretches back more than 40 years. Faculty in 10 subspecialties care for patients, train the next generation of health care professionals, and develop breakthrough therapies for Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, stroke and more.

With 110 faculty members working across six divisions and four sections, the department fosters a culture of curiosity, collaboration, innovation and accessibility. You can expect our leaders to demonstrate the spirit of equality and inclusion found across the School of Medicine and OHSU.

The Oregon Layton Aging & Alzheimer’s Disease Center (OADC) closely integrates its clinical mission with its designation as an NIA-funded Oregon Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (OADRC). The Memory Assessment and Aging & Alzheimer’s clinics are located at the OHSU CHH1 clinic and are staffed by specialty-trained cognitive or geriatric neurologists, a geriatric psychiatrist, two advanced practice providers, two neuropsychologists, a nurse, a patient care coordinator, and a social worker. Geriatric neurology and psychiatry fellows also contribute to the clinical team.

This highly experienced specialty team is widely recognized across the Portland metropolitan area, the state of Oregon, and the Pacific Northwest.  Patients are typically referred for evaluation of adult-onset cognitive disorders, diagnostic clarification, treatment recommendations and implementation, and information regarding clinical trial opportunities.

Given the growing demand for services, appointments are available by referral from neurologists and related specialists.  As part of the OADRC research process, new patients are presented at a weekly team meeting where cases are reviewed and standardized diagnosis are assigned.
