The Knight Cardiovascular Institute (KCVI) is recognized as a top integrated center for cardiovascular clinical care, translational research and professional training in all aspects of heart and vascular disease. Guided by a multi-disciplinary approach, researchers and clinicians drive a vibrant translational research program, which focuses on delivering the latest knowledge and cutting edge care to patients. Specifically, research at KCVI seeks to improve patient outcomes by achieving earlier diagnosis of disease, more accurate monitoring of its progression, and tailoring therapy to the molecular basis of disease.

 

 

Function/Duties of Position

This position is for a Senior Research Assistant in the Knight Cardiovascular Institute, supporting research focused on vascular biology and pulmonary physiology (asthma). Applicant must have previous research laboratory experience with handing rodents. They will perform experiments individually and as a member of a research team. Senior Research Assistant will be required to perform immunohistochemistry, western blotting, managing cell cultures, managing rodent colonies, and performing ELISA experiments and assist in surgery.

  • Plans, conducts and completes laboratory/animal experiments.
  • Perform experiments in the space of molecular/cellular biology including PCR, Western blot, immunohistochemistry, cell culture, and ELISA.
  • Collect, record, organize and analyze data and attend and present at lab meetings.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's in relevant field AND 1 years of relevant experience OR equivalent combination of training and experience 

  • Experience in animal handling, rodent husbandry and genotyping 

  • Experience in molecular biology applications including but not limited to western blotting, ELISA, immunohistochemistry, and quantitative PCR 

  • Familiarity with cell culture techniques

  • Experience in analysis of experimental data

  • Skills/knowledge of standard animal handling and husbandry practices.
  • Skills in navigating and maintaining animal use protocols
  • Skills/knowledge in protein/DNA prep, Western Blotting, ELISA and immunohistochemistry
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office applications
  • Knowledge of best practices regarding scientific data documentation and collection, data integrity

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Experience in cardiovascular research

  • Background in animal models of asthma preferred

  • Familiarity with rodent surgeries

  • Experience in laboratory compliance with OHSU IACUC, DCM, Biosafety, and radiation safety and DEA for use of controlled substances

  • Experience in scientific writing

  • Skills/knowledge in animal surgical models
  • Skills/knowledge in advanced imaging modalities (2-photon, confocal, etc.)
