OREGON, Portland.  Oregon Health & Science University, (OHSU), is a leading health and research university that strives for excellence in patient care, education, research, and community service.  Casey Eye Institute, Department of Ophthalmology at OHSU is recruiting a Genetic Counselor for a one-year Ophthalmic Genetic Counseling Fellowship.  

This position is intended to equip the fellow with additional, post-master’s degree genetic counseling with experience in ophthalmology and clinical research. The fellowship will run from June 2025-July 2026. Qualified applicants are asked to submit their application with a CV, cover letter and 2 letters of recommendation.

Function/Duties of Position

In coordination with the Ophthalmic Genetic Counselors, provide comprehensive genetic counseling services to individuals and families seen at the Casey Eye Institute. Services include: 

  • Coordination of appropriate clinical and research genetic testing options.   
  • Track, document, and communicate genetic test results to patients and health care providers.  
  • Obtain and review medical and family histories of scheduled patients prior to clinic and prepare a summary for the physicians.  
  • Screen and answer patient and health care provider inquiries as they relate to genetic counseling or genetic testing services.  
  • Maintain updated patient education materials and disease resources.  
  • Assist with inherited retinal disease related research projects including but not limited to obtaining patient consent, data collection, data entry, and preparation of manuscripts.  
  • Perform requirements for Staff Members as outlined in Compliance Roles and Responsibilities in OHSU Hospitals and Clinics.   
  • Carry out job responsibilities in an ethical, effective, and professional manner.   
  • Report potential compliance problems using the reporting processes as outlined in the Code of Conduct.    
  • Model ethical and appropriate behavior, professional standards, compliance, and personal integrity.   
  • Understand and comply with the Code of Conduct, OHSU and departmental policies and procedures, applicable rules, regulations, etc.   
  • Document in the medical record all patient care services delivered in support of third-party bills.   
  • Process billings for hospital and clinic charges in accordance with HCFA, Medicaid, Champus and all commercial and managed care carriers.   
  • Assures departmental compliance with all applicable third-party payer regulations and contracts.   
  • Adheres to all Casey Eye Institute Service Excellence standards and expectations and attends all related mandatory training programs.   

Required Qualifications

Masters in Genetic Counseling (M.S.)Board certified or active candidate through the ABGC/ABMGDetail-oriented, meticulous, and efficient in all aspects of work. Strong follow-through skills and ability to pro-actively identify and solve problems. Requires excellent organizational skills, strong communication skills with the public as well as physicians/researchers.  Demonstrates innovation, initiative, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work well independently as well as with team members. Ability to plan and organize technical work, multi-task, and to adapt to a changing work environmentMust have demonstrated a record of reliable attendance, punctuality and proven successful performance in past and present.
