Department Overview

A full time position is available in a Cell Biology lab to study the molecular basis of the human disease, hereditary hemochromatosis.

 

The Research Assistant 2 provides a full range of support, with minimal supervision, in a research laboratory. Must be able to prioritize a variety of projects, able to work effectively with the principal investigator, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students, and able to independently solve problems.

 

Position requires that personnel perform animal procedures including breeding mice, injections, health checks, oral gavage, surgery, tissue harvest, and tissue preparation following necropsy and experience in histology. The candidate should have a scientific background in cell biology, experience and general knowledge in all aspects of tissue culture, qRT-PCR, SDS-gel electrophoresis, site-directed mutagenesis and some protein chemistry. Candidate will also be expected to perform general laboratory duties.

Function/Duties of Position

  • Breeding and maintenance of mouse colonies

  • Perform histological staining of tissues and in situ hybridization

  • Participate in lab meetings, and contribute to publications

  • Perform bench top cell biology (tissue culture, run gels, do westerns)

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's in relevant field OR
  • Associate's AND 3 years of relevant experience OR
  • 4 years of relevant experience OR
  • Equivalent combination of training and experience* 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in cell, molecular, or developmental biology
  • 2 years relevant research experience

  • Experience in animal handling

  • Willingness to learn histology

  • Competency in maintaining animal colonies

Additional Details

Work is generally 40 hours per week during normal working hours, however, some evening and weekend work will be necessary on occasion. Additional safety training will be required to work with cell lines/ infectious bacteria or viruses/ working with in a BSL-2 environment. Working with laboratory animals is required.
