Function/Duties of Position

The staff biostatistician will provide support for Dr. Travis Lovejoy’s NIH- and VA-funded research projects, including clinical trials and observational research studies. General responsibilities include study planning and methodology, data management, statistical analysis and consulting, and manuscript review/preparation for internal and external reports as well as research publications. Will need to be able to take the lead in managing the research process with a team that has varied experience working with statistics and research processes.

 

This position involves significant interaction with clients (investigators and research teams, which requires excellent and effective oral and written communication skills. For example, the incumbent should be able to explain complex data management steps, statistical concepts and results to those with little statistical training.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Biostatistics or Statistics or related field AND 3 years of relevant experience OR Master's Degree in Biostatistics or Statistics or related field AND 9 years of relevant experience. Equivalent combination of Bachelor's in relevant field in conjunction with training and experience may be considered.
  • At least 3 years data management and analysis experience with VA administrative data.  Experience should be focused on utlizing these sources for research and/or program evaluation.
  • Familiarity with nuances/complexities of working with VA administrative data for research
  • Solid statistical programming skills (R, Stata, Python, and/or SAS) including working with large, complex data sources that require management/curation to prepare for analyses.
  • Demonstrated mature and effective interpersonal communications skills including tact, diplomacy and flexibility with appropriate demeanor to maintain good working relationships.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to interact with faculty and investigators, staff, students, and visitors at all levels within OHSU and in the community.
  • The ability to forge and foster collaborative working relationships both within OHSU and with external partners.
  • Effective scientific writing skills, especially as related to statistical analysis methods and data interpretation.
  • Ability to manage and perform multiple tasks under conditions of fluctuating workloads, competing requirements, and changing deadlines; working independently and following through on assignments with minimal direction. Ability to work in a complex environment.
  • Discretionary judgment necessary to handle confidential matters.
  • Ability to analyze problems and offer creative solutions and implement changes.
  • Strong time management and demonstrated capability to work on multiple projects at one time.
  • Strong demonstrated organization skills, with the ability to understand overall program objectives and maintain attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience guiding/mentoring investigators and/or colleagues re: statistical concepts.
  • For masters-level applicants, at least 5 years (post degree) of collaborative research experience with at least 3 years specifically in health sciences research. 
  • For doctoral-level applicants, at least 1 year (post degree) of collaborative health sciences research experience.
  • Experience applying longitudinal analysis (beyond graduate coursework) strongly desired.
