Department Overview

We are seeking a Research Assistant to support ongoing research in the OHSU Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME). This position will work directly with BME and other OHSU scientists to study blood platelet function. Duties include preparing microscopy slides for light microscopy and immunofluorescence microscopy analysis; collecting, abstracting, entering and/or analyzing data; preparing regulatory documents and work reports; assisting with study start-up/maintenance and research subject visits. Function/Duties of Position

  • General: Responsibilities will include preparing blood samples for platelet experiments. Preparing and analyzing microscopy slides for light microscopy and immunofluorescence microscopy analysis. Assist daily in preparing materials for experimental procedures. Work with OHSU BME and other researchers to carry out established experimental protocols. Collect data from ongoing experimental efforts. 
  • Inventory and order lab supplies. Maintain organized and clean lab areas as required. 
  • Compliance & documentation: Organize, present and archive data associated with ongoing research projects. Basic data entry, accuracy required. Maintain lab notes and research databases and prepare data for presentations. 
  • Other duties in support of lab research and organization, as assigned. 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree (4yr) / No experience, OR AA (2yr) and 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills; ability to manage diverse tasks.
  • Flexibility in work hours, and a commitment to excellence.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft applications (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint), Slidebook, Zeiss ZEN, Image J and other software application.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with major courses in medical, biological and chemical laboratory sciences.
  • Prior experience in basic molecular biology research lab techniques (e.g., pipetting, preparing buffers).

  • Prior experience in working with human blood samples for research. 

  • Ability to preparing whole blood samples for basic and translational research studies of platelets.

  • Basic knowledge of hematology, coagulation and cell biology.

  • Knowledge of interventional cardiology tools and procedures (e.g., TAVR).
