Department Overview

The purpose of this position is to support the physical, occupational and speech therapy activities of the Rehabilitation Services department. Under the direction and supervision of a licensed therapist or assistant, and in accordance with hospital policies and procedures, the Therapy Aide provides treatment-related and non-treatment related assistance to the patient care team. Treatment-related tasks include but are not limited to assisting patients with mobility, and assisting therapists with treatments. Non-treatment related tasks include but are not limited to cleaning and preparing treatment areas, facilitating communication between the patient, hospital staff, and rehabilitation staff, providing telephone customer service and 1:1 verbal customer service, assessing equipment and supplies PAR levels, ordering linen and supplies, using a computer to look up and enter necessary information, such as statistics or charges, and completing other routine departmental or administrative functions. The Therapy Aide recognizes and addresses age-appropriate needs when caring for patients. The Therapy Aide assists in maintaining the practice environment, and equipment and supplies in a clean, orderly condition.

Function/Duties of Position

  • Prepares the patient for treatment as directed by the PT/OT/SLP/PTA (obtaining necessary equipment and supplies, facilitating communication between the patient and the therapist). Ensures patient safety and comfort following a visit (patient call light within reach, bedside table returned, etc.). Prepares treatment areas prior to the visit to ensure the proper equipment and supplies are set-up for therapy treatments. Assists with patient care when two or more people are required for safety, under the direction and supervision of licensed therapist. Cleans treatment areas and equipment following visits. Monitors patient when unattended by therapist. Reports unexpected responses to treatment to responsible therapist.
  • Facilitates departmental communications between hospital staff, patients and therapists by providing excellent customer service, including but not limited to greeting customers, using the telephone, paging system or Vocera to respond to patient and hospital staff inquiries. Contacts therapists about new or urgent orders for rehabilitation services and patient status/feedback  for unattended portions of treatment-related tasks.
  • Delivers equipment and supplies to therapists or treatment area, assists with monitoring PAR. Ensures equipment is regularly available for use in designated treatment areas (example; returns/redistributes walkers to storage area). Cleans, monitors and organizes treatment equipment and equipment storage areas, including equipment before and after patient use, assists with distribution of equipment and other deliveries to appropriate areas, including FEES scopes to/from sterile processing
  • Monitors PPE, linen and other department supplies inventories, ordering replacements as necessary though department processes or Logistics.
  • Utilizes Epic, OneDrive, Outlook and other computer applications, as needed, to assist with monitoring department processes and communications, patient care needs, and daily flow planning.

Required Qualifications

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Current American Heart Healthcare
  • Provider BLS Certification
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Medical terminology, previous health care experience preferred

Additional Details

Relief Schedule: Requires availability of 4 shifts per 2 weeks pay period, with 2 of those shifts on weekends, as determined according to the Employer's needs.

Uses standard precautions to limit potential for exposure to blood or body fluids.
