The purpose of this position is to coordinate clinical research for OCT studies of the Center for Ophthalmic Optics and Lasers Lab. The coordinator must have prior ophthalmic technician training with experience to effectively and accurately perform the testing required by each study protocol. The coordinator will maintain study recruitment and follow-up study visits as dictated by the study protocols. This position requires rotating through various clinics, such as Retina, Cornea, Glaucoma, and Comprehensive Ophthalmology, as required by study recruitment efforts. This position also requires a significant amount of administrative/clerical duties, including but not limited to maintaining spreadsheets, maintaining study binders, and coordinating the scheduling of study visits with clinical staff.
Ability to perform ophthalmic screening/testing evaluations on patients for the principal investigators. Screening tests will include Snellen & ETDRS vision, Manifest & ETDRS refraction, visual fields, OCT scans, low contrast sensitivity, low contrast visual acuity, corneal topography, axial length measurements, and ultrasound pachymetry.
Ability to coordinate and maintain research patient recruitment and cooperation in the studies, obtain informed consent and ensure appropriate scheduling in compliance with the study protocols. Careful and accurate recording of data onto case report forms, uploading of data to the central database/reading centers, and maintaining study binders.
Willingness to learn regulatory guidelines, record-keeping and other procedures relevant to human subjects studies, including Institutional Review Board (IRB) submissions and oversight. Successful candidates must be willing to maintain/obtain CPR certification.
Participate in continuing education courses and activities. Have knowledge of and be able to practice JCAHO clinical guidelines. Demonstrate competence in all required skills during skills evaluations.
Provides high quality customer service to patients, OHSU faculty and referring providers, to include PCP’s and their office staff, and co-workers and staff as well as setting an example in training new employees. Maintains a high standard of patient interaction skills and is exemplary in addressing patient complaints when necessary.
Education/Experience:
Certification: BLS certification at Provider level through the American Heart Association is job required at time of hire. Initial certification is the responsibility of the employee. Renewal certification classes/costs provided by OHSU if job required.
Job related knowledge, skills and abilities:
Experience conducting preliminary ophthalmic testing to include specialized tests and visual fields.
Proficiency with computer applications such as Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, and related computer applications.
Bachelor’s degree with major courses in field of research or; RN or; allied health professional.
1 year experience in and knowledge of various aspects of clinical trials. Proven skills in interacting with patients in a study environment.
2+ years of experience conducting preliminary ophthalmic testing to include specialized tests and visual fields.
COA or COT certification within first year of employment, if not already earned.
