Function/Duties of Position

The Dental Clinics Billing Specialist & Managed Care Coordinator support position at the OHSU School of Dentistry is a support role within the Patient Financial Services Department, supporting comprehensive billing, insurance, and managed care operations for OHSU Dental Clinics.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Insurance Coordination: Support dental and medical insurance processes, including eligibility verification, benefit application, pre-authorizations, referrals, coordination of benefits, and submission of claims and appeals.
  • Billing and Collections: Support claims processing, patient and insurance billing, collections, refunds, and reconciliation of deposits. Provide support for overdue accounts, process of patient statements, and address billing questions or concerns.
  • Customer Service: Provide high-quality service to internal and external stakeholders, including patients, staff, students, faculty, and referring providers. Communicate policies clearly and professionally, addressing inquiries or complaints through telephone and written communication.
  • Policy Knowledge and Implementation: Understand and apply OHSU Dental Clinics policies, including those related to payments, insurance, and clinic operations. Adapt to the specific needs of various clinic departments and provide policy guidance to patients, staff, and providers.
  • Training and Collaboration: Provide support for team members to train new personnel on financial workflows or processes and present information to groups as needed. Collaborate with the Patient Financial Services team to complete tasks and projects effectively.

Additional Expectations:

The Dental Clinics Managed Care & Billing Specialist support plays a critical role in ensuring a seamless patient revenue cycle and providing an excellent experience for patients and staff. This position requires flexibility, professionalism, and the ability to complete work with considerable independence on a daily basis.                                                         

This combined role offers the opportunity to develop expertise in both managed care coordination and billing operations, providing valuable support to the OHSU School of Dentistry's mission. 

Required Qualifications

  • Two years of recent (within the last 5 years) experience in a medical or dental office setting, including high volume patient care, billing/collecting and/or obtaining insurance eligibility/care authorizations
  • The candidate must have a thorough knowledge of PAS policies and procedures
  • Candidates will have demonstrated advanced PAS user skills as well as extensive knowledge of integrated care at OHSU
  • Experienced in utilization of electronic health records
  • Demonstrable record of reliable attendance, punctuality and proven successful performance at past and present employers
  • Demonstrated exemplary tact, discretion, confidentiality and diplomacy.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, write and understand written and oral instructions in English.
  • Demonstrated record of exemplary customer service experience
  • Computer proficiency, including the use of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel
  • Able to accurately enter and maintain sensitive data and patient information into electronic computer database
  • Perform all duties in a manner which demonstrates the ability to work in a collaborative, self-managed, and self- directed work-team environment
  • This position will be asked to be present at the clinic for training and meetings, but otherwise most work will be done remotely/hybrid. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associates Degree in Accounting, Medical Billing, or related area
  • Experience with EPIC
  • Experience with AxiUm
  • Experience with dental and medical insurance benefits and authorizations
  • Experience with medical billing
  • Proficiency with axiUm preferred
  • English/Spanish language proficiency
