Department Overview

The Tilikum Summer Health Experience is a 5-week hybrid summer enrichment program specifically designed for American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) freshman and sophomore college students. Through a combination of virtual learning and in-person experiences, students will receive academic training, mentorship, and hands-on exposure to the health professions, all while staying connected to their cultural identity. Student workers for the Tilikum Summer Health Experience will serve as a vital part of the program team, providing logistical and participant support for both in-person and virtual elements of the experience. 

Function/Duties of Position

Participant Support and Communication:

  • Serve as the first line of communication between participants and the program team.
  • Escort participants to and from classes, events, and activities, ensuring punctuality and safety.
  • Encourage participants to ask questions and provide support during classes and activities.

Event and Activity Support:

  • Accompany participants to cultural and educational events, as well as end-of-day activities.
  • Help set up and facilitate program activities as needed.
  • Serve as a Teacher’s Assistant, supporting faculty in instructing one or more courses.

Overnight Support (if assigned):

  • Be on-call for any participant needs that arise during the night.
  • Rotate overnight shifts with other workers to provide equitable coverage.

Required Qualifications

  • Enrolled in or on vacation from or is otherwise registered in Undergraduate Program (minimum 6 credit hours).

  • Knowledge and experience working with American Indian and/or Alaska Native organizations and communities.

  • Strong interpersonal communication and leadership skills.

  • Ability to take initiative and work independently as well as in a team environment. 

  • Intermediate computer knowledge and skills using MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook).  

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience participating in, or supporting, educational or mentoring programs.

  • Experience using survey development and data management programs.

Additional Details

• This position requires working on-site at Portland State University and OHSU during in-person weeks, as well as working remotely for virtual weeks.
• Some physical activity, such as escorting participants and setting up activities, may be required.


WORK SCHEDULE:

  • Shifts:
    • Two shifts covering 8:00 AM–2:00 PM and 2:00 PM–8:00 PM.
    • Overnight shifts rotated among three student workers.
