This position provides technical support to pharmacists through preparation of unit doses, data entry, delivery
of medications, and cartfill exchange. Person working this shift is responsible for ensuring accountability and accuracy of standard operations procedures in these areas. Position works under direct supervision of a Pharmacist who is responsible for the safe and proper distribution and use of drugs in inpatients and outpatients who range in age from neonates, infants <1 year old, children and adolescents ages 1-18, adults ages 19-65, and the elderly age >65. Be able to perform duties as specified in Pharmacy Technician 1 and 2 Class Specifications as applicable to work unit.
Prioritize labels from new orders to assure that product is delivered to label location at least one hour prior to label due time.
Prepare, mix and compound sterile medications, including chemotherapy.
Adherence to aseptic procedures when preparing, mixing and compounding sterile hazardous and non-hazardous medications.
Performs pharmaceutical calculations in verifying dosage for medications to be prepared.
Cleans and maintains primary and secondary engineering controls (e.g., vertical and laminar flow hoods) and equipment used to compound sterile hazardous and non-hazardous medications (e.g. repeater pump, work surfaces), discarding all non-preserved and/or non-labeled solutions in order to keep work area clean and orderly.
Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):
Possible exposure to hazardous chemicals and noise. Understand the difference of non-hazardous and hazardous medications; safely handle hazardous medications per regulatory guidelines. Flexibility in scheduling of shift times. Accountability for accuracy associated with performance of the duties to this position.
