Department Overview

The person in this position is responsible for day-to-day management of oncology and infusion pharmacy services at OHSU and partner hospitals. Off site clinics are in scope and are not limited to Knight Cancer CHO clinics. This person supervises staff who review, compound, prepare, and dispense medications, manage medication inventory, support technology/automation, and support operational workflows. With guidance from Senior Managers and Directors, this persion develops, enhances, and implements programs/initiatives related to automation, technology, and the EHR. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to meeting compliance related requirements; policy revision and development; quality, safety, and process improvement work; and training of staff, residents, interns and students. This person may act as or support team members who are registered with the Board of Pharmacy as Pharmacists In Charge. This person serves as a role model by staffing alonside their employees in order to maintain content expertise between 0-40% of the time. This position rotates on-call responsibilities.

Function/Duties of Position

Pharmacy Practice:

  • Executes all job duties as outlined in the pharmacist position description. On-call responsibilities are also included.

Automation and Technology Systems Maintenance:

  • Maintains exisiting or creates new automated dispense cabinet and picture taking technology records, medication tray checking software records, and unit dose packaging records. Responds to automation and hardware change requests and identifying solutions for all automation defects in a timely manner to support patient care.

Program Design & Development:

  • Contributes to the development and/or redesign of automation and technology systems. Updates policies/procedures to support service improvement or expansion. Establishes best practices in service area(s) to improve patient care outcomes and improve electronic health record functionality as needed to enhanced patient care.

Quality and Safety:

  • Continuously monitors and reports quality and safety data for clinical services using metrics focused on pharmacy user, patient, and external customer satisfaction. Resolves unsafe conditions and inefficient work processes. Practices Performance Excellence (OPEX) for daily management and continuous improvement.

Medication Management and Compliance:

  • Assist in the management of drug shortages and high cost medications by providing clinical expertise related to utilization and alternative therapies. Appropriately employs automation and technology to ensurs clinical practice is complaint with appropriate laws, regulations, and organizational policies.

Supervision of Staff:

  • Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules, and supervises assigned staff. Develops performance standards, conducts performance appraisal (PE), and recommends salary increases consistent with hospital policy and procedures.

Required Qualifications

  • Licensed Pharmacist in Oregon
  • Pharmacy BS or PharmD
  • PGY1 residency or 2 years of relevant experience

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):

  • Proficiency in an area of clinical pharmacy practice
  • Professional communication, written, and verbal 
  • Contemporary Practice of Pharmacy

Preferred Qualifications

  • PGY2 Informatics residency Work history demonstrating involvement in leadership projects
  • EPIC certification
  • Beacon certification
  • Board Certification
  • Proficiency in management of systems such as EPIC, DoseEdge, Tray Safe, Omnicell products Publications in peer reviewed journals
  • Presentations at state or national pharmacy conference
  • Experience precepting and lecturing

Additional Details

The incumbent will spend a significant amount of time at a computer terminal. The position must deal with

situations on a daily basis with a high degree of intensity. In addition, within the health care setting there

can be significant lack of control over the work pace, with frequent interruptions (work is often dictated by

external factors) that may lead to mental fatigue or stress.
