Department Overview

The nurses of the Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit (NSICU) provide patient and family centered care to the patient populations of neurosurgery, neuro-medical and stroke including: subarachnoid hemorrhage, cerebrovascular aneurysms, microvascular decompression, cerebrovascular thrombosis, intraparenychmal, hemorrhage, subdural hematoma, tumor resection, mysathenic crisis, aneurysm clipping, coiling, and stents. We receive patients in referral from Oregon, Washington, Northern California, with outliers from as far as Idaho and Montana. As a critical care unit, the nurse to patient ratio is either 1:1 or 1:2 due to the acuity of the patient population. In addition to being the first dedicated Neuroscience ICU in the state of Oregon, we are also nationally certified as an Comprehensive Stroke Center. Our nurses work in collaboration with a neurointensivist team which provides 24/7 coverage for our patient population.

Function/Duties of Position

The Intensive Care Unit technician (ICU Tech) position is part of the healthcare team in the Adult Critical Care Cluster. The ICU tech performs tasks of direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and as directed by the department nurse manager. The ICU tech will provide assistance in the maintenance of supplies pertaining to the ICU, and will assist with quality assurance activities for the ICU. This individual has the ability to communicate data reflective of the patients’ status and delegated tasks to the RN or LIP in charge of patient carre. The ICU tech assists the patient, patients’ families, visitors, nursing staff, and other support staff to assure the delivery of quality care in a safe and comfortable environment.  ICU Techs contribute to the success of the department and support of team members.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • One year recent experience (within the past 5 years) providing patient care in an ICU or similar setting.

  • Within 6 months of hire:

    • 12-lead EKG placement though EKG dept.
    • CBG QC compliance through POC dept.

    • Rehab training through OHSU PT dept.

  • BLS/CPR upon hire 

  • Ability to perform the job duties with or without accommodation.
