Department Overview

14K is the Adult Bone Marrow Transplant unit here at OHSU. Our unit is designed to serve patients on multiple levels, from ambulatory infusions to acute care and intensive care. We, on 14K, are leaders in providing innovative and proven treatments on a daily basis. We have many nurses that are nationally certified in oncology as well as possess advanced practice degrees, all of which allows us to offer the highest quality treatment along with compassionate patient and family-centered care. 14K HUC Schedule of work: ¿ Week 1: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday (0630-1500) Week 2: Tuesday, Wednesday (0630-1500) Saturday, Sunday (0700-1930)

Function/Duties of Position

1 Reception Responsibilities:

- Promote and portray a desirable image and maintains positive guest relations when interacting, greeting, and providing information to staff, patients, family members, visitors, physicians and the general public.  Refer to charge nurse, primary nurse, or NM when appropriate.

- Receive, screen, transfer, or place phone calls.

- Initiate and process phone calls, fax’s, pages, and take messages as requested.

- Communicate on behalf of NM, and others.

- Participate in, document, collect, and collate data for CQ/other studies.

- Identify and facilitate ideas for improving efficiency of unit operations.

- Assist with acuity and staffing as designated.

- Coordinate unit staff coverage as designated.

- Assist with preparing and faxing acuity and staffing information.

- Maintain the work station, supplies, resource materials, library, patient, and visitors reading materials in an orderly manner.

 

2 Secretarial Responsibilities:

- Sort and distribute all incoming mail.

- Organize and maintain unit filing systems.

- Perform filing tasks as required.

- Act as a resource for staff to facilitate activities involving coordination of care or services with other departments.

- Order, store, and maintain inventory control of forms, equipment, and supplies.

- Act as a resource during Code 99 and other emergency procedures to locate staff, equipment, supplies, and to meet any other needs.

- Maintain logs and statistics related to unit operations and projects.

- Assist with payroll maintenance as directed.

- Prepare or maintain medical records and Kardex in correct order, updating and adding as necessary.

- Update census board and notify appropriate health care providers of new patient admissions or transfers.

- Initiate physician orders, either manually, by fax, or on computer.

- Inform charge or primary nurse of new orders, stat orders.

- Participate in the billing procedure as assigned.

- Copy unit/patient information and materials as requested.

- Schedule procedures and coordinate transportation arrangements.

- Perform all related work as assigned.

 

3 Computer Responsibilities:

- Maintain accurate census by prompt and accurate entry of all admissions, discharges, transfers, add-ons, etc.

- Maintain accurate nutrition care orders.

- Order entry as required.

- Maintain accurate “attending physician” data.

- Initiate computer downtime procedures as needed.

- Serve as Network Contact backup/resource for the area/unit to assist with all computer related issues, problems, access, and maintenance accessing and reporting to ITG and NM as required.

 

4 Direct Patient Care Assistance:  The following duties are assigned based on unit need or priority.  HUC’s that are multi-skilled and are cross-trained, i.e., to CNA, may assist patients as required/directed.

- Respond to call lights, determine patient need, and meet need if appropriate or notify appropriate personnel.

- Escort patients at time of discharge.

- Assist as requested with nourishment distribution.

- Provide family care including providing information within unit defined standards.

 

5 Housekeeping Assistance:

- Straighten utility and kitchen areas.

- Notify charge nurse or appropriate department of broken equipment and obtain replacement if needed.

- Clean equipment.

- Attend to spills immediately

 

6 Independent Activities:

- Complete inventories as designated.

- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Required Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent

One year work experience
Basic knowledge of medical terminology.
Basic math skills.
Basic computer skills.
Demonstrated effective verbal and written skills.
Ability to prioritize.
Demonstrated organizational skills.
Ability to bend, stoop, stand, walk throughout the shift.
