Department Overview

The mission of the Information Technology Group (ITG) is to develop, implement, and maintain technology-based services and solutions enabling OHSU to effectively manage information to accomplish its missions.

 

The mission of the Advanced Computing Center (ACC) at OHSU is to meet the advanced computing needs of the OHSU research, academic, and administrative community by providing a scalable set of advanced computing services that augment and supplement no-cost core services provided to the OHSU Enterprise by the Information Technology Group. These services include technical consulting; tiered research storage solutions; secure local and remote collaboration options; virtual environments; application hosting and license management/compliance; co-location and support for research computing systems; secure and public web portals; support of the High Performance Compute cluster; and support for cloud computing based research projects.

 

The purpose of the position is to provide a skilled research and engineering resource to design, develop, deploy, support, and integrate resources and services that reside on campus or on the cloud. The appointee needs to have a broad understanding of technology in order to anticipate customer needs, investigate alternatives, and synthesize and deliver unique solutions to advanced computing issues. Specifically, the appointee should have some knowledge of, and possibly specialize in, one or more of the areas below:

  • Architectural design, deployment, monitoring and operations of cloud resources (AWS, Azure);
  • System performance troubleshooting and optimization;
  • System administration for Windows and/or Linux servers;
  • Cyberinfrastructure planning and design.

Function/Duties of Position

Must understand and support a range of technologies and platforms in a manner consistent with departmental and organizational strategies. Supports research customers with the following:

  • Provides technical engineering support for advanced high-tech research and education by collaborating with researchers to identify, promote, and synthesize new solutions and services.
  • Defines and presents system requirements, capabilities, and possible enhancements.
  • Works directly with the researcher/requestor/customer to provision and establish recommended and requested services and ensure billing is set-up appropriately.
  • Leads or provides key expertise for hardware and software acquisition decisions, as well as supports security review process to ensure the product meets and complies with OHSU security policies.
  • Collaborates with users to determine and implement access methods and controls for network accessible data.
  • Updates system and user documentation to ensure technology solutions are managed appropriately.

Develops, and maintains ACC functionality including:  

  • Supports user interfaces, gateways and other interfaces by choosing, deploying, and possibly customizing software programs.
  • Deploys, uses, and maintains appropriate system provisioning, management, monitoring, and alerting software.
  • Identifies, implements, and verifies desired operations, communication links or output of system programs.
  • Designs and directs implementation of new programs or software products on computer systems.
  • Documents changes to systems and software for use by other ACC staff.

Installs, maintains and supports computer hardware and software for ACC, and provides guidelines for configurations to other members of the staff by:

  • Ensures an appropriate review of specifications and documentation;
  • Directs installation, and/or may install new system software on test or production systems, compilers, utilities;
  • Designs appropriate modifications to system software programs or configuration to adapt to other parts of the software system, which may change unexpectedly.
  • Develops test plans, conducts scheduled system testing, and logs results to ensure appropriate preventive maintenance performed on a regular basis.
  • Diagnose application and hardware problems and provide suggestions for solutions and on-going support.

Troubleshoots complex hardware, software and connectivity problems with timely resolution:

  • Uses diagnostic skills to isolate cause of failure;
  • Determines if failure is hardware or software related;
  • Consults with appropriate vendor on hardware problems and replaces failed component or requests service call;
  • Designs temporary fix for software related problems and contacts appropriate vendor for permanent solution;
  • Ensures that appropriate memory dump, trace and all supporting software diagnostic output is available for the vendor;
  • Provides technical information to other staff on the optimal utilization of systems software capabilities and the effect of modifications to systems software on the operation of application programs.

Required Qualifications

Education:

PhD in relevant field and 3 years relevant experience; OR 

Master’s degree in relevant field and 5 years of relevant experience; OR

Bachelor's degree in relevant field and 7 years of relevant experience

 

Experience:

  • Prior system administration experience.
  • Experience in computer system architecture, design and support.
  • Experience working in a complex environment with multiple platforms and protocols.

Job Related Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Broad understanding of multi-platform hardware, operating systems, applications, networks and programming.
  • Strong verbal and written communication.
  • Excellent technical problem solving ability.
  • Excellent interpersonal, customer service and teamwork skills: ability to work independently and as part of a team while being collaborative in resolving problems.
