Department Overview

The mission of the Information Technology Group (ITG) is to develop, implement and maintain technology-based services and solutions enabling OHSU to effectively manage information to accomplish its missions. As part of the Business Intelligence & Advanced Analysts (BIAA) division of ITG, this position is responsible for supporting reporting and analytics for the Professional Billing and Enterprise Coding. The person in this position will interact directly with key business staff to understand key initiatives and how data can be used as a strategic asset in support of the business.

 

The business intelligence analyst will take requests for new reports and through collaboration with the requestor and team members, will identify and document the detailed requirements. The analyst will design and develop a reporting solution that meets the customer requirements and also complies with OHSU Finance and BIAA standards. Epic Integrated Analytics capability is strongly preferred. Skills required include: development with Epic Reporting tools (Radar, SlicerDicer, Reporting Workbench); data warehousing and operational knowledge with SQL; development experience in at least one relevant third-party reporting tool such as: Business Objects Webi, PowerBI, or Cognos. The analyst should understand all phases of a system development life cycle and accompanying data analysis.

Function/Duties of Position

Solution Development and Management: 

  • Development and monitoring of real-time extracts from Epic Reporting Workbench as needed for solutions such as SmarterDx
  • Update current database programs, create new database programs to support the department
  • Test and make needed changes when updates are implemented
  • Ensure data integrity in current system and when creating and moving to new systems
  • Provide recommendations for selection of systems for new programs and projects

Solution Development for Analysis of Payor Contracts:

  • Pending expirations of OHSU Health Payor Contracts and contract language specific to continuity of care requirements
  • Participates with Managed Contracting Team in planning, designing, and implementing new or enhanced contract reporting updates
  • Identify workflows that would most benefit from contract-expiration focused reporting and make recommendations on new methods and practices

Planning, Analysis, Design and Development:

  • Meet with customers to translate complex requests for reporting, system, and data needs and fulfill, validate, revise, deliver, and maintain the solution
  • Identify and advise on technical limitations, alternatives, data extraction methods, and create data collection tools as needed
  • Collaborate with analysts, developers, managers, and leadership to define requirements and inform priorities and needs
  • Perform complex research in complicated data environments and front-end systems to ensure correct data selection and validity
  • Interpret results and provide insights, consultation, and decision support for customers
  • Research and recommend improvements in workflow, documentation, or alternative solutions
  • Collaborate with Business Intelligence Architects for the development and/or maintenance of reporting solutions

Report Generation:

  • Requires in depth/advanced knowledge of Epic Integrated Analytics (Reporting Workbench, Radar, SlicerDicer (i.e. components, template modification, filters, variable creation, formatting)
  • Knowledge of data visualization development with tools such as Microsoft PowerBI
  • Write complex queries and run reports from the various OHSU data warehouses
  • Alternate and translate between different database platforms and languages
  • Optimize SQL code for efficient execution
  • Explore and explain outcomes, significant trends, and impact
  • Distribute monthly, special quarterly, and annual reports as requested
  • Manage confidentiality of highly sensitive subjects
  • Research and implement improved and/or automated distribution methods
  • Respond to report consumers to explain significance of reports and impact of results
  • Test and review with every Epic upgrade. Follow best practices and optimization to limit system impact
  • Identify workflows that would most benefit from embedded reporting and make recommendations on new methods and practices
  • Participates with Information Technology Group staff in planning, designing, and implementing new or enhanced information systems

Required Qualifications

Education:

  • Master’s degree in computer science, a related field, or a clinical field and two years work related experience in the information technology field or a combination of clinical or operational healthcare environments; OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, a related field, or a clinical field and four years work related experience in the information technology field  or a combination of clinical or operational healthcare environments; OR
  • Associate’s degree in computer science, a related field, or a clinical field and five years work related experience in the information technology field or a combination of clinical or operational healthcare environments; OR
  • Six years work related experience in the information technology field or a combination of clinical or operational healthcare environments; OR
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience where one year of experience will be substituted for an Associate’s degree and two years of experience will be substituted for a Bachelor’s degree

Experience:

  • Prior work as a reporting, data or business intelligence analyst, where responsibilities included:
    • Interfacing directly with business staff
    • Experience gathering and documenting business requirements and planning and managing projects
    • Providing recommendations on appropriate use of data
    • Identify gaps or data quality issues

Job Related Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proven communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Experience using relational databases as a source for reporting
  • Experience with developing in Epic Reporting tools such as Radar, SlicerDicer, Reporting Workbench
  • Understand all phases of a system development lifecycle and data analysis
  • Ability to read, write and maintain SQL code
  • Experience gathering and documenting business requirements
  • Experience developing in 3rd party tools such as SAP Business Objects/Webi, MS PowerBI, MS Excel, IBM Cognos Report Studio 

Certifications:

  • Certification or Proficiency within 9 months of hire in one of the following: Epic Clarity, Caboodle, Palette (Reporting Workbench, Radar, SlicerDicer).

    • Clarity Data Model
    • Caboodle Data Model
    • Revenue Data Model

Experience:

  • Experience developing at an academic medical center or healthcare related organization
  • Knowledge of healthcare ambulatory data, including clinical, financial and operational

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):

  • Ability to read and explain a relational data model
  • Three years of experience developing in Epic Integrated Analytics (Reporting Workbench, Radar, SlicerDicer)
  • Three years of experience developing in T-SQL 
  • Three years of experience creating reports using Enterprise BI tools (e.g., Business Objects Webi, MS Power BI) 
  • Business Object Universe/IDT development knowledge
  • Operational knowledge of Data Warehousing and Data Marts, including dimensional modeling concepts 
  • Experience with Epic applications and/or the Epic Clarity environment
