Department Overview

Occupational Health is a section of Human Resources Division dedicated to the promotion and protection of the health, safety, and well-being of OHSU employees, visitors, and volunteers. The department provides services, resources, and programs to promote total worker health, address safety compliance needs, and prevent workplace hazards.


Under the direct supervision of the department leadership team, the HUC performs general administrative duties and specific services necessary to expedite the efficient functioning of the Occupational Health Department consistent with the philosophy, goals, policies, and procedures in the Human Resource Division and OHSU.


The HUC serves an important role in frontline patient coordination and has the ability to maintain control and order under stressful conditions, while utilizing effective and respectful communication with patients and the health care team.

Function/Duties of Position

Safety & Patient Experience - Act to promote a safe environment and Patient Centered Care across the continuum to ensure service excellence to foster exceptional experiences for our patients/employees

  • Greet and screen patients.
  • Confirm patient information.
  • Print test labels, check labs, enter lab results and communicate test results as necessary.
  • Accurate and timely charting of all patient vaccination and testing history into EMR system
  • Make post-discharge follow-up appointments (as requested)
  • Daily maintenance of patient waiting room and front desk environments
  • May assist in clinical procedures, as trained.

Communications & Administrative Operations - Support operations necessary to meet the needs of the unit.

  • Facilitates department communications
  • Addresses phone calls, pages, voicemail and email inquiries/requests
  • Scan, file, and properly dispose of (PHI bin) all patient record(s) to ensure high standard patient information (HIPAA) handling
  • Supports meeting scheduling, agenda, and notetaking
  • Reports and tracks equipment requiring maintenance
  • Prompt reporting of all clinical and administrative minor and/or patient safety incidents for proper follow up

Purchasing - Department purchasing, receiving and reconciliation of all P-Card and Purchase Order requisitions or requests

  • Order and take inventory of department supplies, equipment and instrument requests.
  • Order and stock office supplies on a regular cadence
  • Demonstrate the effective use of resources in all purchasing practices; acquire all appropriate approvals prior to purchases

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED;

  • One year of clerical experience in a health care environment OR

  • Equivalent combination of experience and training that would provide above referenced knowledge, skills and ability. 

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):

  • Reads, writes and speaks fluent English;

  • basic knowledge of medical terminology,

  • basic math skills,

  • demonstrated computer skills,

  • demonstrated customer service skills,

  • ability to prioritize and multi-task

Preferred Qualifications

  • National Health Unit Coordinator certification preferred
  • Previous hospital or clerical experience preferred.
  • Customer service related experience preferred.

Additional Details

This is an in-person position, Monday – Friday 0700 – 1530.
Frequent assignments with tight time frames and need to prioritize and multitask.
Direct patient contact.
