Department Overview

The Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Knight Cancer Institute, known as one of the pioneers in personalized cancer medicine, is an international leader in research and cancer treatment. Driven by its mission to end cancer as we know it, the institute is building upon its expertise in targeted treatments to advance the early detection of cancer when the disease is most treatable.

 

Knight Cancer Institute – Outpatient Clinics

The Knight Cancer Institute Outpatient Clinics deliver comprehensive care to patients diagnosed with a wide range of cancers, including both solid tumors and hematologic malignancies. The Float APP will provide clinical coverage across all areas of the cancer center. This includes support for multiple disease teams, procedure areas, and the infusion unit. The Float APP will be deployed to cover staff absences due to sick leave, FMLA, or scheduled vacations.

 

The Float APP will manage up to 12 patients per day, including individuals undergoing chemotherapy, stem cell transplants, or long-term follow-up care. They will function as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team that includes physicians, fellow Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), RN coordinators, and other allied health professionals. Depending on the needs of each clinical area, the APP may practice independently or within a shared-care model alongside physicians.

 

Schedule:
Four 10-hour shifts per week which could include weekend and holiday coverage.

Function/Duties of Position

The Float Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will be responsible for delivering high-quality, patient-centered care across various outpatient oncology settings. Key responsibilities include:

 

  • Provide independent medical care in the outpatient setting to a defined patient population.
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with attending physicians regarding patient conditions, treatment plans, and urgent clinical needs.
  • Communicate clearly with patients and their families about diagnoses, treatment plans, progress, and follow-up; review laboratory and imaging results as appropriate.
  • Ensure patients are triaged and managed in the appropriate setting (e.g., outpatient, inpatient, critical care, acute care).
  • Document all patient encounters—subjective and objective data, assessments, and plans—accurately and thoroughly in accordance with OHSU documentation standards.
  • Deliver comprehensive symptom management for complex oncology patients in collaboration with oncology nurses, palliative care providers, social workers, and other support staff based on patient needs.
  • Maintain clear communication with primary care providers and external entities (e.g., skilled nursing facilities) to ensure continuity of care.
  • Provide care to patients enrolled in clinical trials, following protocol-specific guidelines and ensuring timely communication with principal investigators, research nurses, and study coordinators, including accurate documentation of any adverse events.
  • Deliver urgent medical care for who require same-day evaluation.

Required Qualifications

Ability to obtain within the first 90 days of hire

 

Nurse Practitioner:

  • Registered Nurse license for the state of Oregon
  • Nurse Practitioner license for the state of Oregon
  • Nurse Practitioner license for the state of Washington
  • State of Oregon Nurse Practitioner Prescriptive Privileges
  • State of Washington Nurse Practitioner Prescriptive Privileges
  • DEA certificate
  • ANCC (or equivalent) certification

Physician Assistant:

  • Physician Assistant license for State of Oregon
  • Physician Assistant license for State of Washington
  • DEA certificate

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ years of APP experience in Hematology Oncology
  • Hematology Oncology Certification
