Department Overview

The successful applicant will work in the laboratories of Dr. Ninian Blackburn (Oregon Health & Sciences University) and Dr. Kelly Chacon (Reed College), both located in Portland Oregon. The primary focus is on the mechanism of copper export in the CusBCAF exporter which contributes to virulence in gram negative pathogens. This position will utilize advanced kinetic and spectroscopic approaches such as stopped-flow fluorescence and rapid-freeze quench x-ray absorption/emission methodologies. This position will likely provide guidance and supervision to students and lab technicians as appropriate. Extended out-of-town travel will be required. This description is intended to represent the overarching focus of this position – the responsibilities listed are not all-inclusive and additional responsibilities will be assigned as needed.

  • Protein isolation and characterization with emphasis on determining metal concentrations and electronic structural properties.
  • Measurements using rapid kinetic methods including stopped-flow and rapid freeze quench techniques.
  • Analysis of rapid kinetic data.
  • Spectroscopic measurements on metalloprotein structure/function, with an emphasis on fluorescence and X-ray spectroscopic techniques
  • Developing protocols for isolation of intermediates.
  • Computer modeling with an emphasis on spectral simulation.
  • General biochemical laboratory techniques As needed.
