Department Overview

The objective of this position is to conduct research in the diagnosis and management of retinal diseases using advanced imaging technologies such as optical coherence tomography (OCT), OCT angiography and ultra-wide-field photography. This requires maintaining current knowledge of the pertinent literature, and formulation of clinical study design, image processing, deep learning model construction and statistical analyses to illuminate specific research questions. A significant percent effort will be placed on developing specific hypotheses, performing algorithm development, designing validation plans, calculating statistical power and sample size requirements, and writing and preparing presentations and manuscripts.

Function/Duties of Position

  • Areas of research interest include image grading to build up ground truth, machine learning approaches based on optical coherence tomography (OCT), OCT angiography and photography technologies to achieve diagnostic accuracy analysis, longitudinal data analysis, survival analysis, regression analysis, disease progression analysis, etc.  Give presentations of research results.   

  • Preparation of manuscript for journal publications, papers and grant applications.

  • Teach image processing, image grading, and statistics to research and clinical trainees. 

 

Required Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Biomedical Engineering, Medical Physics, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Ophthalmology, or relevant field AND 3 years of relevant experience OR
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Engineering, Medical Physics, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Ophthalmology, or relevant field AND 5 years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Meical Physics, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or MD in Ophthamology

  • One year work experience or equivalent in thesis researrch and other research projects
  • Experience in medical image processing, image grading, imange analysis, and clinical study desiogn is desirable
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills are critical. 
  • The successful candidate must be able to work well independently and assume responsibility for specific phases of research projects.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work well with team members are essential.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and creative thinking is essential. 
  • Familiarity with image processing, image grading, research design, statistics and the use of computers for research is highly desirable.
  • Expert knowledge of programming languages. 
  • Ability to work independently; willingness to serve as a positive and professional role model.
