Department Overview

The purpose of this position is to provide support to OHSU outpatient pharmacy specialty services and the Knight Cancer Oncology pharmacy program. Responsibilities include prescription prior authorization and approval, prescription dispensing, medication histories, patient outreach and medication assistance. The individual is required to have extensive knowledge of third party processing, EpicCare and Epic Willow.

Function/Duties of Position

  • Assists in all technical support activities relating to prior authorization requests and approvals.

  • Supports OHSU outpatient pharmacy program through activities such as prescription dispensing, patient outreach, specialty pharmacy enrollment, and refill reminders.

  • Provides medication assistance support to OHSU patients. Assists pharmacists in non-clinical activities, E.g. maintenance of Medication Assistance Program patient information. Receives and maintains medication assistance inventory.

  • Interacts with other health care team members and patients and displays a high level of customer service commitment.

  • Triages incoming phone calls from pharmacy staff, patients, and providers.
  • Understands billing systems (both internal and external third party) and prescription processing.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma, active State of Oregon Pharmacy Technician License AND

  • 1 year of pharmacy work experience, or equivalent additional education; AND

  • Certification from the national Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or National Healthcareer Association. Certification must be maintained.

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):

  • Ability to read and understand medical-related terms.
  • Ability to perform basic pharmaceutical mathematics calculations.
  • Ability to establish priorities in workflow.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work under supervision of diverse Pharmacists.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Formal pharmacy technician training program
  • Inpatient and outpatient hospital pharmacy experience.
  • Medical and scientific nomenclature

Additional Details

The individual will experience competing demands on their time from clinic staff and/or patients and will need to effectively multi-task. Must be able to perform well within a team environment and work in a collaborative and cooperative manner. Must be able to deliver a consistently high level of customer service.
