Department Overview

The Landscape Technician performs landscape and irrigation maintenance on OHSU's Marquam Hill Campus to provide a safe, clean, and aesthetically suitable environment for staff, patients and visitors. Duties include, but are not limited to: operating grounds maintenance equipment, Journeyman-level trimming and pruning, applying herbicides, pesticides and fertilizer as required, and in compliance with State of Oregon laws, operating motorized equipment like push-mowers riding lawn-mowers, tractors, including snowplows and Bobcats during inclement weather. Performing the proper maintenance of tools and equipment.

Function/Duties of Position

Conduct landscape maintenance work to the OHSU Marquam Hill Campus as assigned with personal and public safety always on the mind. Duties include:

  • Removing leaves, brush, gravel, litter and debris from building roofs, sewers, utility tunnels, streets, parking lots and structures, building entrances, loading docks, bus stops and sidewalks using rakes, blowers, vacuums, and shovels; empty trash cans as needed, transport litter, and plant debris; remove ice and snow from walkways, parking lots, and building entrances using plows, shovels, blowers or deicer; clean drains, catch basins and gutters; remove stains and spills such as oil and grease from parking lots and walkways; fill potholes. Must operate turf maintenance equipment, chain saws/pruning equipment, pesticide sprayer equipment and hand tools for entire periods of the work day. This position must comply with all applicable personal protection requirements for all required assignments.
  • Apply pesticides and fertilization programs as required by department's maintenance calendar. This position must comply with all applicable safety equipment required for all chemical applications.

  • Team up with other landscape techs or work solo to complete projects, sweep campus, respond to emergency situations, preform flagging duties, and periodic cleaning of tool and shop areas. Complete special projects as assigned by supervisor. 

  • Make minor repairs on tools and equipment such as lawn-mowers, chain saws, and blowers; maintain vehicles and power equipment by tuning engines, checking fluid levels, lubricating and cleaning after use.

Irrigation Systems Maintenance / Mechanical.

  • Adjust, repair, and replace broken irrigation heads, irrigation valves, isolation valves, and PVC pipe.
  • Trouble shoot electrical and water supply issues. Program irrigation controllers.
  • Read and understand irrigation as-builts.
  • Work with landscape architects and landscape contractors in the design of sprinkler heads, recommend purchases, and inspect construction installations for code and specification compliance.
  • Maintain accurate electrical diagrams and blue prints of OHSU Marquam Hill Campus irrigation systems.

Required Qualifications

  • Two years of experience in landscaping, which included plant, care;  OR 

  • An Associates degree in Landscape Technology or Horticulture.

  • Pesticide Applicator Certification is required within 1 year of hire.

  • Valid State of Oregon or Washington Driver's License.
  • Valid State of Oregon or Washington certification and license to apply turf and ornamental pesticides.

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):

  • Able to lift up to 80 lbs unassisted for fertilizer and de-icing applications for an eight hour period.
  • Able to work in all adverse weather conditions.
  • Reliable transportation to assist with inclement weather and emergency requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associates or Bachelor's Degree in Horticulture or other related field.
  • Lead Worker Experience
  • One year Landscape and irrigation CAD operator experience.
  • One year computer software program skills related to landscape irrigation controls and water optimization programs with evapo-transpiration-based applications.
  • Certified Landscape Tech
  • Certified Arborist
  • Backflow Certification to troubleshoot, repair and calibrate irrigation system backflow devices
  • Certification as a Water Auditor with the City of Portland

Additional Details

Outdoor environment, year round, including inclement weather conditions. This position must be available at all hours, 7 days per week, 24 hours per day subject to on-call basis within Facilities for inclement weather duty or disaster conditions. Must have transportation to arrive on campus in any weather condition, and will be subject to extended work hours in times of inclement weather or other emergencies.
