Department Overview

The Oregon Institute of Occupational Health Sciences is an independent research institute within OHSU that is dedicated to health and safety in the workplace. The Institute receives its base funding from the Oregon Workers' Compensation Fund and leverages this base funding to secure federal government grants in basic, clinical, and applied research. We perform biomedical/occupational research and innovation for a healthy workforce, aimed at promoting health and reducing disease and disability among workers across the nation, particularly in Oregon.

 

This position will be involved in the conduct of human-participant research. Under direct supervision, duties of this position may include collecting data in the lab, conducting data entry and validation, conducting literature reviews, processing samples, obtaining consents, coordinating study visits, etc. May involve some travel as needed to collect participant devices.

Function/Duties of Position

Applied Science/Fieldwork:

  • Traveling to field research sites: may span a diverse range of domestic and regional sites to support research activities (e.g., focus group facilitation, environmental scans, community forums, consenting individuals, data collection, etc.)
  • Assisting with outreach (mailings, website, etc.) 

Research Sites/Studies/Basic Science/Lab:

  • Sample processing, assays, cell/tissue culture, animal studies, library research, data collection, recording transcription,
  • Cleaning/sterilizing lab instruments and surfaces
  • Stocking lab benches with supplies

Clinical Research:

  • Involved in the conduct of human-participant research and the development and/or management of regulatory compliance with clinical research protocols: screening, enrolling, recruiting, andn retaining research participants; coordinating study visits and research schedules; obtaining consents; conducting blood draws and sample collections: monitoring research activities and participation.

Required Qualifications

  • Enrolled in or on vacation from or is otherwise
    registered in Undergraduate program (minimum 6 credit
    hours)
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
  • Exceptional organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to be self-motivated, to prioritize effectively and achieve deadlines
  • Ability to gather, compile, analyze and maintain, in a range of formats, information from a variety of sources, including research publications, web sources, and internal and external contacts
  • Ability to exercise discretion when dealing with issues of a sensitive nature and to maintain research integrity

Preferred Qualifications

  • Student currently working on a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
  • Experience in research is highly desired
  • Knowledge and application of gathering, compiling, and reporting research information for a peer-reviewed publication

Additional Details

Depending on whether the student will be working in applied science, basic science, or clinical research, may involve traveling to field research sites (public transit or personal car), working with lab chemicals, or interacting with research participants.
