Department Overview

The END Technologist 2 prepares patients and conducts routine and advanced outpatient and inpatient END procedures; collects data pertinent to the interpretation of test results and assists medical staff with complex recordings.

Function/Duties of Position

Patient Preparation:

  • Tech documents a comprehensive patient history including neurological symptoms and medications.
  • For EEG: this tech measures and accurately applies electrodes in less than 30mins and with appropriate impedance of <5kohms. The Tech 2 is able to use multiple electrode application techniques; observes, records, and attempts to eliminate artifact and body movements that can affect recording of cerebral activity, and prepares a technical report. Learns and applies basic EEG waveform recognition, relevant medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, infection control, current HIPPA practices, and contraindications for activation procedures.
  • For NCV: this tech accurately applies electrodes and enters data into the computer to determine nerve conduction velocity. Assists, teaches and mentors- physicians, residents, fellows and new employees in NCV/EMG procedures. For the NCV Tech only- this class may also perform intermittent lead tech duties.

EEG, EP, NCV, AT Examinations:

  • This tech performs at least one modality and in accordance with the standards and protocols of the department. Implements alternative methods or adjusts controls to obtain optimal recordings. Observes and records conditions and reactions of patients during exam; notes extraneous conditions which may affect recording; operates equipment; notes body movements for benefit of interpretation by neurologist.
  • For EEG the Tech 2 is able to perform more advanced ICU, EMU, WADA studies as well as routine inpatient and outpatient studies. For NCV the tech is able to perform more advanced studies such as blink reflexes and H-reflexes.

Equipment Maintenance:

  • Maintains clean testing equipment, maintains proper sanitization of supplies and surrounding area, and reports equipment malfunctions in writing to the engineer.

Required Qualifications

  • BLS certification; high school diploma or equivalent; one year of experience in the performance of procedures in a patient care environment; 
  • Certification in one of the following (as indicated in the position description) will be required upon hire: 
    • EEG/Electroencephalography: R. EEG T. 
    • EP/Evoked Potentials: R. T.
    • NCS/Nerve Conduction Studies: R.NCS.T. 

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):

  • Computer literacy
  • Ability to troubleshoot common equipment problems 
  • Clear, concise written documentation and interpersonal communication skills
  • Knowledge of current techniques/regulatory standards

Preferred Qualifications

  • BS or Master’s degree in an allied health education program with the completion of an END program.

Additional Details

HRC, DCH, and KPV locations on campus. Possible exposure to human tissue/fluids and direct patient contact.
