Patient Preparation:
- Tech documents a comprehensive patient history including neurological symptoms and medications.
- For EEG: this tech measures and accurately applies electrodes in less than 30mins and with appropriate impedance of <5kohms. The Tech 2 is able to use multiple electrode application techniques; observes, records, and attempts to eliminate artifact and body movements that can affect recording of cerebral activity, and prepares a technical report. Learns and applies basic EEG waveform recognition, relevant medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, infection control, current HIPPA practices, and contraindications for activation procedures.
- For NCV: this tech accurately applies electrodes and enters data into the computer to determine nerve conduction velocity. Assists, teaches and mentors- physicians, residents, fellows and new employees in NCV/EMG procedures. For the NCV Tech only- this class may also perform intermittent lead tech duties.
EEG, EP, NCV, AT Examinations:
- This tech performs at least one modality and in accordance with the standards and protocols of the department. Implements alternative methods or adjusts controls to obtain optimal recordings. Observes and records conditions and reactions of patients during exam; notes extraneous conditions which may affect recording; operates equipment; notes body movements for benefit of interpretation by neurologist.
- For EEG the Tech 2 is able to perform more advanced ICU, EMU, WADA studies as well as routine inpatient and outpatient studies. For NCV the tech is able to perform more advanced studies such as blink reflexes and H-reflexes.
Equipment Maintenance:
- Maintains clean testing equipment, maintains proper sanitization of supplies and surrounding area, and reports equipment malfunctions in writing to the engineer.
