The primary function of a Stationary Engineer 1 is to provide skilled journey level operations and maintenance support for the generation and distribution of high-pressure steam campus wide. This includes but is not limited to: central boiler plant, boiler plant auxiliary systems, steam distribution system/piping, and condensate return system/piping. This position also plays a vital support role for other departments. This includes but is not limited to: emergency generator fueling, diesel tank inspections, and medical gas farm inspections.
This position reports to the Energy Manager and is based out of the central heating plant which operates 24/7. Stationary engineers that work after hours provide support to the fire systems team and 800 shift technicians when needed and as their duties allow.
Operates the high-pressure steam generating boilers and maintains accurate operating logs. Adjusts the boiler operations to maintain efficiency. Maintains the operation of steam distribution, condensate return equipment, and perimeter heating equipment. Monitors the medical gas distribution system and underground storage tank monitors (diesel). Responds to trouble calls from campus dispatch and other facilities groups.
Performs planned and corrective maintenance on steam boilers, centrifugal and positive displacement pumps, meters, mechanical, pneumatic control components, valves, piping, and steam traps, blowers, refractory, flow meters, conveyor equipment, gauges and de-aerating feed tanks. Utilizes precision measuring devices including micrometers, calipers, electrical test meters, compressed gas analysis equipment, dial indicators and electronic temperature sensors.
Performs water analyses to determine the chemical and mechanical water treatment necessary to maintain established parameters.
Assists OHSU facilities groups and contractors in the performance of their tasks.
May be required to work; dayshift, swing shift or graveyard, any day of the week, including weekends, to support the 24 hour steam plant operation.
Work Conditions:
Must be able to work in or around: high levels of noise, extremely high temperatures, dirt, dust, odors, fumes and wet environments, poorly lit areas, bio-hazards, radioactive hazards, moving machinery and confined spaces. Danger of steam and hot water burns, electric shock, infection, lifting and minor injuries. Performs work in confined spaces such as underground utility tunnels, manholes, cooling towers and boilers using regulations and guidelines in performance of such duties. Required to walk, stand and work while bending and stooping for extended periods. Required to work outdoors in inclement weather.
