Department Overview

The mission of the Information Technology Group (ITG) is to provide and support technology and information services that enable OHSU to be a national leader in health and science innovation. The work of the Business Intelligence & Advanced Analytics Division (BIAA) is to establish data as a strategic asset.

 

As a part of the OHSU Business Intelligence & Advanced Analytics (BIAA) division, this position is responsible for developing a data and analytics toolsets required for support of the Learning Health System efforts. This includes creating new data warehousing, data transformation, and data integration assets, and provisioning

data to support algorithms used in machine learning and artificial intelligence. This work will be accomplished in partnership with data scientist, informaticians, analysts and various other supporting roles. Collectively, this group will support the innovative use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve the health and well-being of our patients, ourselves, and the broader community; OHSU is committed to accelerating the safe and effective use of AI through a virtuous learning cycle defined by the Learning Health System.

 

Primary duties will include, but are not limited to: ETL design, source to target mapping, ETL development, peer review, testing, version control, metadata documentation, production implementation and support. The incumbent will also be responsible for scoping and estimating effort for ETL and data warehousing projects, which includes presenting technical information and solution design proposals to system architects, project team members, and BIAA leadership.

Function/Duties of Position

Data and Systems Engineering:

  • Work with BI architects, developers, data scientists, and informaticians to design, create, and publish data sets, data flow processes, and metadata.
  • Data mapping, transformation, cleaning and otherwise optimizing for storage and use according to business and technical requirements.
  • Leverage and extend the OHSU Epic Caboodle Data Warehouse capabilities by designing, developing, testing, and implementing ETL.
  • Develop and maintain innovative cloud data feed and/or solutions, task automations, and data pipelines. 
  • Collaborate with BI Architects, Developers, Analysts, and customers to design, create and publish data models, ETL processes, and metadata using the Epic Caboodle Console, as well as third party ETL tools.
  • Provide complete and consistent documentation of data warehouse content in the Caboodle Console to ensure that users can determine what data is available in the warehouse, how this data is defined, and lineage to Epic Clarity. 
  • Documentation of created assets in the appropriate BI asset library.
  • Develop Epic Clarity and Caboodle data feeds using SSIS, ensuring data feeds have undergone appropriate security review, and are transported abiding by the guidelines of the information privacy and security office, as well as any further security requirements outlined in a business associates' agreement or data use agreement. 
  • Coordinate data integration projects with system architects, DBAs, and vendors. 
  • Apply appropriate security structures and policies to data and database objects. 
  • Make recommendations on best practices for code maintenance, deployments, and migrations working in conjunction with SQL Server DBAs and enterprise data architects.

Systems Analysis and Operational Support

  • Gather and document technical requirements necessary for planning and managing enterprise projects with technical deliverables. 
  • Participate in discovery sessions with customers, data scientists, informaticians, and vendors to gather and document detailed requirements that inform the design and development of new or modifications to existing BI solutions.
  • Data Analysis, data profiling, and solution design.
  • Develop data sources and metadata models to be used for ad hoc analysis or reporting.
  • Troubleshoot and analyze ETL process failures, data anomalies and other ETL or data warehouse issues identified by automated monitoring, other developers, and end users. 
  • Work through established processes to resolve any system or data problems and communicate updates and status to affected groups.
  • Recommend improvements to ETL processes, tool sets, data models, and monitoring techniques to improve existing structures and code to increase reliability and efficiency.

Required Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, a related field, or a clinical field and eight years work related experience in the information technology field or a combination of clinical or operational healthcare environments; OR 
  • Associate’s degree in computer science, a related field, or a clinical field and nine years work related experience in the information technology field or a combination of clinical or operational healthcare environments; OR 
  • Ten years work related experience in the information technology field or a combination of clinical or operational healthcare environments; OR 
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience where one year of experience will be substituted for an Associate’s degree and two years of experience will be substituted for a Bachelor’s degree.

Experience:

  • Two or more years of paid work experience as an Application Engineer.
  • Two or more years of paid work experience developing data warehouse objects and/or data integration ETL solutions.
  • Minimum three years of experience with Microsoft SQL Server SSIS ETL development.
  • Minimum two years of experience working with healthcare clinical data.
  • Experience loading, processing, and maintaining data in a cloud computing and storage environment.
  • Experience and working knowledge in operating system software, relational and/or hierarchical databases, and technical application support for administrative and clinical systems.

Job Related Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Competencies):

  • Knowledge of data warehousing architecture and dimensional modeling concepts.
  • Ability to read, write and maintain SQL code at an advanced skill level.
  • Proven communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects on an ongoing basis with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to accurately document system technical artifacts at a level of detail sufficient for ongoing production support.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Epic Caboodle Certification
  • Microsoft Certified Azure Data Engineer
  • Epic Clarity Certification in a specific subject area (Inpatient, Ambulatory, HB, PB, etc.)
  • Minimum two years of experience with the Epic Clarity data model.
  • Minimum two experience with the Epic Caboodle data model.
  • Experience planning and managing small projects.
  • Minimum of three (3) years SQL Server Experience, including SSIS and T-SQL, coding, performance tuning, and system optimization.
  • Minimum of two (2) years' experience with python or pyspark.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience with Azure DevOps
  • Experience authoring and maintaining content using MS Azure Analysis services, Azure Data Factory, and Azure Data Brick, Azure Storage
  • Experience authoring and maintaining content using AWS Redshift, Athena, Bedrock, Quicksight and related AWS services.

Additional Details

General Physical Requirements:

  • Subject to computer work for several hours, as needed.
  • May be expected to utilize office equipment within work area.
  • Sitting in a chair or on a stool continuously, up to 8 hours per day
  • Changing Position intermittently, as needed from sitting to standing to walking, etc.
  • Carrying and lifting Up to 25 pounds (supplies, equipment, books, papers, etc.) for intermittent periods and distances.
