Department Overview

The Health Unit Coordinator is part of the health care team and utilizes their knowledge and expertise to support nursing area/unit operations throughout OHSU. The Health Unit Coordinator's primary responsibility is to enhance the patient experience, both by facilitating communication with healthcare providers and by addressing patient needs as they are able. The Health Unit Coordinator also maintains an accurate and current profile of patients and health care team members in multiple locations: census boards, computers, call lists and charts. The Health Unit Coordinator acts as a communications specialist, providing secretarial and reception skills, computer entry services, and organizational and problem-solving expertise.

Function/Duties of Position

  1. Clerical Support.  Prepares and maintains patient medical records; enters acuity of unit patients; maintains unit census documents/boards; photocopies; maintains and orders unit supplies and resource materials; enters billing data,; opens, sorts and distributes mail; organizes and maintains filing systems; maintains logs, notebooks  and statistics related to unit operations; photocopies and faxes; performs data entry; processes physician orders as directed; operates and serves as resource for wireless communication devices and integrated health record.
  2. Unit Communication.  Answers multi-line phones, screens calls, transfers calls; greets and screens visitors and provides information within unit defined standards; responds to call unit orientation to patients, family, staff and visitors; schedules procedures and coordinates patient transportation to ancillary appointments; communicates with variety of external providers to coordinate arrangements for services as directed; communicates new orders to appropriate staff; locates and pages physicians and staff. 
  3. Miscellaneous.  Assist with patient care as directed by RN staff, within scope of authority and credentials; perform unit errands, transport items, assist with housekeeping functions as directed by RN Staff; act as resource during Code 99 and other emergency procedures to locate staff, equipment, and supplies; collect and document quality data as directed.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of clerical experience in a health care environment or equivalent combination of  experience and training that would provide knowledge and skills listed below:
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology, abbreviations and symbols.
  • Ability to read, write and speak fluent English.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Demonstrated computer skills
  • Demonstrated customer service skills
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task.
  • Ability to perform the job duties with or without accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous hospital or clerical experience.
  • Customer service related experience.
  • National Health Unit Coordinator certification
