OHSU is looking for an exceptional Assistant Director of Enterprise Coding to lead a high-impact team responsible for coding operations that support some of the most advanced medical care in the Pacific Northwest.

 

Enterprise Coding department is the responsible for most of the professional services coding that is performed for Oregon Health and Science University. The Assistant Director, Enterprise Coding is responsible for leading the strategic direction, operations, and compliance functions of the enterprise-wide coding team. This includes oversight of professional, outpatient, and inpatient coding functions, policy development, risk mitigation strategies, quality assurance, and performance benchmarking. This position ensures alignment with institutional goals, federal and state regulatory requirements, and billing accuracy standards to optimize clinical revenue and support high-performance operations.

Function/Duties of Position

  • Provide strategic leadership in developing and implementing coding policies, audit controls, and performance benchmarks across all coding units. Ensure accuracy, compliance, and timeliness of coding and charge capture processes.
  • Collaborate with Provider Education, Coding Education team, senior leaders, compliance, and clinical stakeholders to drive innovation in coding workflows, documentation improvement, and system and tool optimization. Lead or support technology enhancements (e.g., encoder tools, EHR updates). Ensures that all senior management, department directors, managers and employees are informed of significant policies and procedures, and the outcomes of actual operations.
  • Represent the Enterprise Coding department in institutional committees, workgroups, and industry forums. Serve as liaison to legal, compliance, and revenue cycle operations.
  • Conducts personnel hires, written performance evaluations, to include standards for the evaluation of competencies for each job in operations; performs written assessments of employee performance based on responsibilities, competencies and performance targets in the job description. Communicates written, general objectives to employees in a manner that is clearly understood; utilizes job feedback mechanisms that clearly communicate to employees whether objectives are being accomplished. Ensures that employee turnover is not excessive or unreasonable given department circumstances that are subject to management control.
  • Compiles reports and monitors activity related to professional coding and timeliness of charge submission. Develops, implements and maintains an operating environment presence which is timely in its response to all provider inquiries, operational management issues and production.

  • Develops and maintains departmental statistics, indication of on-going workload and performance criteria. Prepares reviews, and submits annual departmental budget and is responsible for monitoring and complying with the approved operating budget. Prepares, audits and submits monthly department invoicing.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum 5 years management or supervisory experience.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in healthcare setting.
  • Minimum of 5 years coding experience
  • CPC or other coding certification

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):

  • Requires a strong background and successful track record in managing a department, data management, employee retention and excellent leadership skills.
  • Knowledge of CPT, ICD-9 CM, HCPCS, CMS E/M guidelines.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Medicare/Medicaid regulations, Federal Register, Federal and State Insurance Billing laws and Mandates.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft tools such as word and Excel
  • Minimum typing speed of 45 WPM.
  • Excellent communication and facilitation skills in working with the physicians and their office staff in resolving day-to-day operating challenges.
  • The manager must promote cooperative relationships with OHSU providers by demonstrating a service oriented, efficient team approach.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Able to assess and direct departmental workflow and managing people effectively.
  • Able to write policies, procedures and instructional material.
  • Ability to plan and perform multi-task projects in a complex and changing environment.
